Doing a brake pad change yesterday and this guy popped in for a visit. Totally wild bird but seemed very comfortable around us. Jumped on the hand straight away and then hung around for a while to chat. He did not like the compressor and rattle gun though when I undid the wheel studs. King Parrots are here often but usually in pairs and attacking our silverbeat. This guy is on his own and looked very lonely.

I have seen this hawk on two consecutive days , both times he flew nearby, had a look and then glided away.
Amazing bird in flight , completely white.
it's a grey goshawk, white morph (odd name...)

I'm not a spiderologist but I would leave that one alone.
We have a lot of different spiders in the vineyards, my wife ,rather than appreciating the variety, moans about them.
No wonder she swells up when they bite her.

Yesterday, 5th Feb, my wife Helen spotted this juvenile Sacred Kingfisher on our back deck. I think that the bird may have been stressed in the heat. We've placed several shallow water bowls around our house for the birds. Bronze Wings, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Magpies and Currawongs are frequent visitors, to the water bowls.

Despite the Sacred Kingfisher's habitat being Australia wide, this was the first time that either of us have seen this type of bird. It was wonderful.

Very special Warren. Great shot. This is one of my favourite threads!

That is a lovely looking bird.
I think we only get kookaburras here but most often I can only tell the difference between one bird and another when I look at the photos on my computer.

Cajun, thank you. I appreciate this thread too.

Franco, I can only imagine how lustrous the Kingfisher would be in good light.

Australian Ravens on the front porch. They had been drinking out of the cat's bowl. When they do their loud call, 'aah-aah-aah-aaahhh', their hackles, the long slender neck feathers are prominent and form a fan. Unfortunately, these two were whispering.

I can't remember if I posted this one before.
it is the dominant male of the mob that comes here.
The other male, Bob, comes by himself or with the family (Elsie and Charlie...) but this one only comes with the mob .
I was showing the photo to my visiting father in law to warn him not to upset this particular roo...

Strong fella. What's his name Franco?

This one does not have a name yet. Not sure why.
His mate, the other male in the mob, I have named Bob.(Bob is slightly smaller, possibly a bit younger)
I bumped into Bob on three different spots this morning, it is drizzling here and he just hopped ahead of me a few meters above where I was walking.
his female Elsie, and her offspring , Charlie, were not far but I would have not seen them if Bob had not be so close to alert me to their presence.

about 4mm wide
A mate of mine , via Face Book, told me it's a spiny spider also known as the jewel spider.

They are a beautiful bird. I watched about 5 of them one day soaring and thermalling around the south summit of Mt Stirling.
It was a captivating sight.

Seems we have a interloper in our
patch...since we have a 4yo running
around, I'll just have locate him to make sure it's a harmless python.

Spotted a Grey Goshawk in my neighbours backyard. By the time I worked out what it was and got back outside with a camera it had already flown off.

I had my father in law visiting for two weeks from NZ. I was very keen to show off our wildlife but most of it was a non event.
The echidna was very active but could not find it, the roos were either up in the bush or not around apart from the mother and daughter pair that is here most days. (he had a very close look at them outside the living room window)
The day after he left, one of the big male roos came with four females(just outside the house, munching away) , the day after that all three wedge tail eagles came to have a look at me digging up some pipes. I thought they had spotted my cat since were flying very low over the house. But no , they were just having a look.
After finding the cat and grabbing the camera they were gone.

I'm writing this watching (through the early-morning gloom) a potoroo foraging through the grass over the side fence.

And my magpies really looked glad to see me get back yesterday. A whole chorus of them up on the hoist warbling away - until I started hanging out things to dry . . .

Found this couple today, not in my backyard but the small lake very close. They are not living here as I've never seen them before, I have done some search online, google, wiki etc. but can't find what birds they are, anyone know the name? :?:

It does look more like an eastern rosella however it doesn't look like a typical specimen (young or old). It also has blue tinges in the white parts of the cheek which a normal eastern rosella doesn't have (Eastern rosellas have white cheeks and crimson rosellas have blue cheeks). Each time I have seen this bird it has been with a small flock of crimson rosellas. I know it isn't the best photo but can anyone confirm if my theory is correct?

I still see this bird daily. It appears to be an eastern rosella but it is still part of a small flock of crimson rosellas. I spoke to a friend of a friend who is a bird expert from Healesville Sanctuary and he has never witnessed a mixed flock either.
