Cheers, this may be frowned upon but I trapped a rat a few hours before I saw the snake so I figured there is no point in wasting it so I gave it to the snake. Didn't take long at all to swallow the thing.

I think I have bandicoots in the backyard again as there are loads of small holes in the lawn and a few poos around the place so the rat trap goes in the roof now, they can't resist Nutella.

Bandicoots can't resist Nutella ?
That's nuts.

No sorry, the rats can't resist Nutella, that was worded somewhat poorly. I got given a pretty large jar as a gift and don't really eat it so I put it on the rat trap and it was a lot more successful than the usual peanut butter.

Not quite my backyard but not that far away.........sort of in my extended backyard.
Walking a local Dandenongs track when I spotted a Lyrebird scratching up a feed.
I switched on my video camera as I approached but the battery went flat about 8 metres short of the little fella.
He didn't seem to care that I was there as I walked right up level with him on the track and only 2 or 3 metres away. All he did was face away from me towards the bush (right of photo).
Rather than cause too much disturbance I kept walking and he promptly turn back and kept scratching up morning tea.
Ive attached a snapshot cropped from the video at the last moment before the battery went flat, but it's complete rubbish unfortunately.

It was a wonderful close encounter but I can't help fearing that if he keeps up the practice of not bolting off into the bush it will lead to his demise.

That's a gross abuse of Nutella.

The birds have been very social the last week; all the usual suspects (butcherbirds, magpies, miners, kookaburras) plus the first winter visit I've had from galahs and also the first time I've had a currawong peering in through the window while I'm trying to work on the photo files. It seemed to be rather cheesed off at having missed Mag & Butch's breakfast handout.

Plus, both Fluffy and a couple of bandicoots have been making a mess of one of the garden beds.

We have red, scarlet and yellow robins nesting at our place. Very pretty and inquisitive at times (they come to look at me working, maybe it's just the worms they are after...)

I'd love to have some Robins close to home but I think the Butcher Birds would eat them like they did with the Finches.
Saw this one right next to the car after a short walk 20km from home, not super sharp as it is cropped and shot at 2500ISO.

Nice photo.
I took mine as the light was fading after I had a few of them flying about all afternoon.
(I was moving piles of green rubbish into a ditch) .
That one was the one that got closer to me so I shot him.

Apparently we do have owls here at my place (according to the previous owners) but I haven't identified a single one.
But I am not much of a birdologist anyway.
(Graham, I'll delete the photo if you don't like it).

Awhile back.

7ft plus python in the chook shed when I cleared the eggs out in the morning.
Snake bloke found it a new home in some bushland.
Reckoned it was 30-40 years old and very healthy
I watched it take 2 rats the night before off the fence.

If the snake is clearly out the rats, I'd let it be.

And another eagle shot, from a few days ago :
Eagle 050818.jpg

after almost 3 years here we have sold the place and going back to Altona because of some (minor) health problems my wife has.
Yesterday as we were showing the property again to the new owners, this eagle flew overhead.
Nice touch.

Yesterday cutting down a tree for a neighbour we found a ringtail possum nesting on it.
It was too late by the time we realised that but the possum got away and there were no babies in the nest.
The tree was in an area that used to be part of my land so i still call that my backyard...

The other week I finally got around to putting together and mounting the Eastern Rosella bird box I got for xmas.

I'd been putting it off but was prompted into action by hearing on the radio that all sorts of wildlife have started nesting early due to the warmer than average weather we're experiencing.

i almost couldn't believe it when this couple came down the very next day and had a quite thorough inspection. They have been back frequently since so I'm hoping we get some babies this year.

Best present ever.

This University of Tasmania survey of wildlife in Hobart backyards may be of interest to some:

There is a possibility that you might get a camera installed in your backyard for a month.

Please do keep in mind that they are heavy and not all that tame...

Love the Python and Echidna, only get the odd mash snake here, definitely no echidnas.

Not a native flower and a pretty boring but important animal.

We get bandicoots and flying foxes most nights, white tailed rats are around but rarely see them. A lot of frogs will start coming into the house/laundry soon. Lots of big green tree, some other yellow and pointy nosed ones. Scientific terms there lol.

The bird shot with the fluff in it's beak is great shot, I don't think I could get a shot that sharp with my tele, still have to calibrate the focus.

Another bee, not may birds breeding here this year, the Noisy Miners chased everything else away.
Fairly happy with the shot, I had been trying to freeze the wings but it seems my gear isn't up to it. The camera has a max mech shutter speed of 1/6000th and it can't trigger the flash if you use the electronic flash. To be able to get to the ~1/10000 I need I'd have to buy a pretty fancy flash and it is too much money/effort for one photo, there aren't many options for Pentax cameras.
1600ISO, no noise reduction or touching up.

Haven't seen my local butcherbirds for months. :( Hope they're OK. The magpie creche, however, opened for business yesterday.
