I was stranded without a camera for the night!!! Aurora was easily visible from inner Hobart suburbs to the naked eye.

It was not just man-made lightshows that brought in the new year, with aurora australis providing Tasmania's aurora watchers with a perfect start to 2016.


Across the state aurora watchers have been posting pictures on a social media page dedicated to the southern light.

Astronomical society of Tasmania's Steve Harvey said those who missed out could look to the skies tonight, where they are clear and away from light pollution.

"Look to the south and let your eyes adapt to the darkness," he said.

"The light should have a greyish, green glow," he said.

Apparently I missed another good display last night.

I got some shots from up the mountain last Tuesday. Beautiful sight. Biggest one I've seen in my short time chasing by far.

Awesome photo Cam. What time was this photo taken? I was also up Mt Wellington last Tuesday night but I think we left too early to see it.

Thanks. It was actually pretty soon after dark. About 9:15. This is one taken slightly earlier with the sunset still visible.



It dulled for a while after about 9:30, then came back strong between 11 and 12.

This is the first aurora borealis over my dorm at university this fall, in the latter part of august. Not as spectacular as your photos, but it's something.

I live in Luleå, Sweden. It's maybe 100 km south of the arctic circle.

From my skiing trip this weekend. The last one is not an aurpra per se, but it is my favourite. I'm not sure about the white balance, but it works.

These are amazing! I need to head further south. It's a goal of mine to see one one day. We did have one visible here in Sydney but the cloud cover was horrendous. So I'll go hunting one day

My car is currently dead, so couldn't go out on Monday night. Luckily it was strong enough to even see from Lindisfarne.




Some friends gave us a lift to 7 Mile Beach on Tuesday night though. Very different display with more beams, but overall less intense. Very clear skies though.

I can only answer for "the world" part. Abisko, a small village here in Norrbotten, is said to be one of the best places to view the aurora from. They have almost no light pollution, good standard on the hostels/hotels, normally pretty clear weather and are in a pretty good spot latitude-wise. It's pretty easy to find a spot to pitch a tent, if one is inclined to that sort of thing.

I have never been there in the winter and not seen auroras at least one night. I'd say late february is the best time around there, with the january storms behind and there still being long, dark nights.

The further south in Australia the better. So Tas is a lot better than anywhere on the mainland, but the ones from last week were easily seen from the southern mainland. Apart from that just need dark, cloudless skies and a solar storm.

Satellites are great, especially as one has the luxury of planning the shot in detail beforehand. Here's an off topic photo of my town with Iridium 7 in the sky.

Cool. I shot the aurora a cpl weeks back. Cloudy Bay, Bruny Island.

And one from The Pleiades a cpl months back.

Just wanted to let everyone know there is an Aurora Alert out for Tasmania tonight.

It was apparently a fantastic show last night.
Of course, the last time I looked outside, the skies were low, grey and damp so I didn't even bother getting the camera ready. Seems it cleared soon after that . . .
