Religion is simply following somebody else's beliefs.
Let's pray the pope organises some decent bush and rainforest to be sent to heaven as well, but according to doctrine that is not possible because trees don't have souls either.
(Hope I don't get sent on the same bus as Abbot for my comments)

Worry not. Various aspects of the doctrine have been "corrected" throughout history. So there's hope yet.

How would the clothes get into heaven? They don't have souls. Shoes might get in on a technicality.

Francis told him in a recent public appearance on St Peter's Square that "paradise is open to all of God's creatures."

That's fine. After all, mosquitoes, leeches, ticks, horseflies and those annoying tiny little buggers that always land on your lens just as you're taking a photo are minions of Satan.

If those of you who believe in "Heaven" feel happy about all of "Gods" creatures being equal why not all animals (including the so called nasties) going there ,I am not a believer in this however I respect the wishes of those who do .

The problem though Corvus, is when adults pretend to know that which they don't, and present those beliefs as fact to children, it has consequences to the child later in life.
There are ways to comfort a distressed grieving child without pretending to know that which one does'nt, and in the process teach them something real.

The consequences can lead to Religious Trauma Syndrome.

I know a lot of people who believe in Heaven, but as far as I know none of them believe that all Gods creatures are equal. :-D

I thought that was parenting. We tend to inflick our own personal views and beliefs on our children. Kids seem to manage ok with the lies we tell them. When they realize that the presents and eggs will still be coming, Santa and the easter bunny who?

G'day Walkon,
I wasn't talking about fairy tales and Santa etc - presumably the parent doesn't actually believe those things.

I'm referring to indoctrinating children into beliefs about the world as if it is knowledge.
I think parents have an obligation to do due diligence on what they pass onto their children in the guise of knowledge, because of the real potential to cause mental harm. Unfortunately, some don't have, or havn't yet mustered the wherewithal to unshackle themselves from their own childhood indoctrination. The cycle of suffering continues.

For some, religion and fairy tales are the same. Though if your world around you fits well with your beliefs, why would you challenge it. Facts are whatever propaganda is being fed to you, take Russia for instance. I'm sure the people believe whatever the government line is are true facts. I've tried to get my children to look at things from all sides and then decide what they think is true. As teenagers, they nearly all want to conform and not be the odd one out. It is harder for kids to want to think differently and be ostracised. In their late teens then individualism is the trend so more likely to question things then. In ten years or so I will be able to tell you if my little experiment as a parent worked. But as humans we all seem to make the same mistakes over and over.
Any geoskid, hopefully in quite a few years, I will answer your question in regards to heaven being there or not. In the mean time, I might hedge my bets :) just in case

To be fair, I think Pope Francis is doing a good job of dragging the organization that he represents into the present.

He has his work cut out though, some won't be dragged willingly.

+1. For whatever view one has on religion, the church in Rome is not going away. For the size of followers worldwide, the current direction is positive for the them as well as the society at large.

Yes, I understand GPS. Sstrangely enough, this came thru on my daily early morning rounds.
http://www.bbc.com/future/story/2014121 ... -disappear

This article brings together learning from a number of disciplines, and poses a question.
I would really appreciate if people read it and commented. Of particular interest to me, is the idea of system1& 2 thinking - which is something I posted about a few years ago after reading Daniel Kahneman.

The disappearance of religion is not my goal, it is that system 2 thinking is encouraged, valued, explicitly taught, and expected of us by our leaders in making policy.
