I'm surprised how well it healed after the fourth picture.

I want to know the story behind it, it just opens up lots of questions. It looks like it was just left without medical intervention? Are rattle snakes not life threateningly poisonous and just cause necrosis like some spiders?

I can't see why you would leave it like that and not have the tip amputated, it is no longer functional given the missing bone and would just get in the way and give you grief I would think.

Thanks Icefest. Yes it was on Reddit. Here's the follow-on discussion from that comment.

It's stupid not to have this treated. They could have saved his finger, and by leaving it be like that he could have had a blood clot travelling to his lungs, heart or brain (ie death). Not to mention a massive infection that, again, could have spread and set up camp in any of his vital organs. My guess is he probably wanted to see how his body was gonna cope with it on its own...

Fascinating! Spat out a bone! Yeah that remaining tip will be more trouble than it's worth ( well, in my game).

I used to be fascinated with my own ingrown toenails as a kid, but this is something else!

Found the pictures of the progression quite interesting, gross but intriguing.
I would have though some sort of medical treatment was appropriate but each to their own, twas me I's be tempted to amputate that finger; depending of course on nerve function

An open wound like that would that would smell so bad!

Wonder if he didn't have health insurance or they just can't do anything? Seems he has a cannula in but that doesn't look like a hospital.
