Don’t you worry about those established arguments. It just requires all sides to go back, consolidate, come up with fresh angles (or forgotten angles) and be recharged for the next round. I’m sure there’s statistics on the cycle period for these. 6-9 months?

Actually I'd agree, and I'd go further to say it's a wider trend across dedicated forum websites as a whole. I'm seeing it on a lot of the ones I'm part of, particularly outdoors pursuits.

Fewer new members are joining, in favor of joining (or starting) Facebook groups, because they may not know or care there are pre-existing online groups for Activity Y, and they're already integrated into the FB/instagram scene. This in turn tends to draw the casual/infrequent members of forums away too, and the more people get on the FB bandwagon, the more that solidifies itself as the discussion hub, more people join, and the snowball builds. Only the older long-term members tend to remain in the forums.

The one exception I'm seeing is a certain motorcycle forum where the demographic is largely male baby-boomers who oddly enough, don't really like facebook. It's downspiralling for other reasons though.

Different story for technical groups (woodworking, model aircraft, machining etc). Different use base, and the FB platform doesn't lend well so well to content with less glam and more actual substance.

I'd say even FB is old school these days and Instagram is in. Hopefully web forums won't go the way of Usenet... That was fun!

All sites have a traffic cycle. the capricious whims of the google algorithm decide who can find any given place. As for the FB and insta crowds, there is a lot to be said for having control of your own page, its the same problem that reddit has, small fractured groups based on personalities. There will always be room for places like this as long as there are people willing to hear differing opinions. At the moment that isn't as much of a focus for a lot of people, but you never know, it could start to come back.

There is always the possibility of having setting fire to a sleeping mat that is tied to a feral horse. I have never done this, and would be most interested in learning what it's like.

But before that we would have to check whether we were in a TFB zone, and ensure that all relevant regulations were complied with and precautions taken. You can't burn a sleeping mat (or a feral horse) just anywhere, you know.

Yes I had an exped fail as well. I'd also like to remove all feral horses from the high country. In addition to that, I regretted not having a good rifle on hand when I saw Walers in the Little Sandy Desert earlier this year.

If the people proposing the use of guns in NPs are prepared to be used as targets, I might reconsider my opposition. Although I think the noise would disturb the wildlife too much. Maybe crossbows would be better?
