Being out of action

Postby gatesy » Mon 10 Jun, 2019 1:26 pm

Hi all

I haven't been able to bushwalk for close to 6 months due to unfortunate circumstances. I've gone a bit nuts not being able to enjoy the summer gone or winter.
I'm wondering what substitutes not being out bush for long periods of time? I've gone pretty blank for ideas.

Thanks

Tough gig.

Picnics in a remote/non-touristy spot with a thermos and a good book? Or just meditating and soaking up the sounds of nature. Good if you have a "secret" place with a fair chance of no annoying types turning up. I imagine it could also be frustrating.

Do you have any kind of ETA for returning to bushwalking? I find the planning to be immensely enjoyable.

As above, plan/research for future walks...plus give you a goal/list to work towards.

Car camp, cave walk, surf/river/lake fish, drive up to a lighthouse bluff and be blasted by the prevailing winds, collect oysters from a secret spot, spotlighting at night, sand between the toes on a deserted moonlit beach...

Improve you health, keep up a basic fitness routine...

Keep your mind busy with hobbies if you can't get out...I was off work for 6months with a back injury about 4years ago, tied flies for trout fishing, muck around with leatherwork, linocut printing etc etc in between lots of Physio. Stuff i was interested in, that usually got sidelined due to real world family/work commitments.
Mountain views are good for my soul...& getting to them is good for my waistline !

As dumb as this sounds, I use an app called white noise. Nature sounds/running water/crickets etc mixes that you can customise.

Falling asleep to those sounds can be surprisingly grounding when you sleep in a different city and hotel every night.

Maybe it will help maintain you in the short term!

+1 on improving health
Take up trail running and do it regularly.

Then your in shape for when you can go walking again.

Books can also broaden your knowledge of the natural walking world too...while your out of action.
Snake id, tracks & scats, birds of prey, Tasmania mammals, fungi, birds in general & their calls(internet), butterflies, spiders, waterbugs, nocturnal mammals etc etc...

Birds stop being just background noise, once you start identify their own individual calls as you walk along...

Depends on what your physical limitations are. Maybe find a quiet spot for a bit of car-camping? There are some isolated areas where you can go without much likelihood of being bothered. Just takes a bit of looking to find them.
