I find it amazing these reports of Americans getting attacked by pet cassowaries and owning blue tongued lizards and sugar gliders as pets. Bizarre considering the restrictions on owning our own native animals as pets. And how exactly does one get a cassowary in the first place, it would be like importing a panda. Do zoos over there close down and auction them off to randoms?

Mah Rights! There are some weird rules, no one cares how you got it, just that you keep it in your own yard. Lots of the weirder stuff was smuggled out a long time ago, and either captive bred, or just have long lifespans. Some stuff is still trapped for smuggling.

Turns out after research the Cassowary is probably a PNG import, as they don't protect the birds. The state requires a permit with 'Substantial experience' as a pre-requisite. Sorry what does the term Mah rights refer to Gadgetgeek, I'm out of date with the latest sayings.
