Never been one to see rules as a solution but have noticed one glorious error made where a protesting poster confused a MSR Hubba Hubba HP with the standard model. Did make him look like a prat to those that know their tents but maybe a potential purchaser could have been put off but turns out the buyers were smarter and knew their tents.

As for robustness I chuckle on what people expect. A fellow walker loves pushing the envelop on light weight stuff and it has largely sailed through where another walker can destroy just about anything.

I think most buyers are smart enough to see through the opinion so no great need for the rule. I have picked a few things up from the forum and struck no problems. Never sold anything on the forum as I hate the sale process and can not bring myself to drop into sales mode. It is actually funny reading some peoples attempts as their sales pitch is rather different how they normally write.

Still do not like to read pack attacks on posters bit too much like cyber bullying. Sure individuals will cross swords but pack attacks? Live and let live would be a better approach.

Cheers

So marketplace threads should all have polls where users can vote on whether or not they think it is a good buy?

Robert, maybe you could use ebay and gumtree instead?

I merely saw an opportunity to improve things and made a suggestion to that effect. Clearly you and some other posters disagree with the suggestion and that is fine. No skin off my back.

This issue raised its ugly head again in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13591

There has also been a few other classified threads in the past few months that have taken a similarly unwanted turn, but I can not find them at this moment.

As has been pointed out in that topic,
You can also choose to lock your own topic and ask for private messages from those interested..

I think this is a good idea.
If you are going to lock your topic, make sure you edit the original asking for PM replies BEFORE locking, otherwise we'll have to help (which we will of course willingly do).

People should do their research before posting if you ask me. If they are incapable of doing that, then it's unlikely their item will sell anyway.

A certain sleeping bag for sale at the moment is another prime example.

It may be a way of avoiding the problem but I would not go so far as to call it a good idea.
At the moment it is encouraged that users lock their threads when they are resolved (sold, found, etc). There is even a new section that is designed for hosting such resolved threads, albeit hardly used. Locking a thread as a means of preserving the ad would introduce a second and contrary meaning to this well established proposition. This would create confusion for viewers and require extra work to discover why the thread was locked (is it still for sale but just locked or is it sold?).

Totally agree. The question is where we think it is most appropriate to express this view. Thread or PM? It is my view that it should be done in a PM.
I would hope users use appropriate courtesy regardless of the method used.

And again: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13598

It should be noted that the add is a bit odd though. I would guess it is a commercial add but could be wrong.

There have been times when people have jumped on someone.. 'I got mine for X$'... 'yours is therefore a rip off'.

If the seller has set a price there is almost always a reason (besides them not having done their research). The colour, model, availability.. by crikey- even delivery speed may be a selling factor yet it doesn't seem to phase some people being pretty quick to post on other members FS threads.

It was my recent reminder that posters can always lock topics, if (as in the market place) they were more posting a statement than asking for opinion.. so I obviously for one think it works ok. If someone locks their topic all that happens is that the buyer needs to do the research no? It really doesn't take long to find a review or weigh up a sale price/benefit..
