Site Unavailable

Postby Allchin09 » Mon 21 Apr, 2014 4:51 pm

Hey,

Is it just me, or is Bushwalk.com not available quite regularly? I haven't been able to get on until now for the last 3 hours or so, and it isn't an uncommon occurrence for me. It also seems to be more frequent in at night.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?!

It happens at my end as well. Appears to be a server error or something.

It's not just you. It does happen regularly. Has happened a few times in the past as well.

Rest assured that it used to be much worse when the server was overseas.

Been down for quite some time today.

If in doubt you can check by going here: http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/bushwalk.com (BTW: I realise the irony of posting this here  ).

Hi guys.
Yep sorry for the down time. The server died for about 1 he yesterday and for some time today. Not sure how long today - I am away for the weekend and not able to look at the full server log.
It has been much more stable this year since I have moved hosting to an AU host.
I am not sure what caused the latest outages but it seemes to be related to the backup (but could just be a coincidence ).
I am hoping to put some triggers in place to keep things ticking over when the server is struggling. Have some in place now but needs to be able to deal with some outage types - tricky to fix a server from your iPhone.

Matt :)

Hi All

- thanks Icefest :)

Site went down again this morning. I got to to a computer and found a few funny things on the logs. Seems like an update process was running at the same time as the backup process causing some grief. Fingers crossed that is the cause of these latest outages.

thanks

Matt :)

Is this why the latest Photo Comps aren't up yet? Or has something happened to the automation?

Thanks Matt, if having this site go down occasionally is the worst thing that happens in my day. That means I'm actually having a good one. Just keeping it in perspective. Your doing well mate and this site is greatly appreciated by many.

Nik used to have this issue alot in the early days, then it stopped. Not sure if he'd be able to help figure out why the site is down so often?

Hi Tibboh
Sorry it was out a fair chunk yesterday - up and down a few times. I have been out bush the last three days and out of mobile coverage a fair chunk -- I noticed it was down yesterday and was able to get it running again from my phone.

This is a new issue -- not sure of the cause -- seems to be a networking issue on the server, something with the operating system rather then the actual website. Unfortunately this is also a very busy month for me so it will take a while for me a to be able to solve this properly.
I am sorry for the frustration.

Matt :)

Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in the ring here to tell everyone that from time ti time I have discovered the site down, and I send Matt an SMS to make him aware.
At this stage there is no other notification method for reporting outages.

When I was managing a few servers around the country I installed Nagios. It was as complicated or as simple as I wanted, monitored web sites, server accessibility, free disk space, cpu load, etc, etc. I'm sure it would do the job and I'm just as sure there are desktop apps that would do something similar. Once set up, I didn't hear from Nagios unless there was a problem (or a looming problem like disk space). I had email and sms messages coming out of it, and it had a web interface I could access from my laptop (pre useful smart phone era)

There are quite a few site monitoring notification services. Ive used Siteuptime.com myself and found it to be pretty good.
Pingdom.com is another.

Thanks Guys
I have installed extra site monitoring software to keep an eye on this website - it is running on a separate server and will hopefully help get this back up and running quickly and also help find the problem causing the outages.
Fingers crossed.

Thanks Allchin09
We have actually had two outages in the last week -- but with the monitoring in place I was able to respond much quicker.
still trying to work out the cause of the issue -- but getting closer I think. Each outage gives a bit more information.

thanks for the encouragement.

Re: Site Unavailable

Postby wildwalks » Fri 30 May, 2014 9:39 am

Yeah sorry about that.
yes we had a nasty port attack that stuffed but part of the server file system. I have never seen anything like it before. If I rebooted the server the attack start again in about 30seconds and made it very difficult to try to repair or even find out what was going on.
To get us back online I needed to build a new server and it takes time for the domain name (bushwalk.com) to look to the new server. hence why we had new.bushwalk.com (as I could get that running quickly).
All up I think we where out for a max of 2hrs -- some people 1hr.
I think I have resolved the issue that allowed the attack in the first place.
Thanks
Matt :)
