Bushwalking on a budget The Op-Shop find thread

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Clearly, you don't always get what you pay for and on occassions, there is such thing as a free lunch. $3 for a pair of skis! Pshaw!!

Skiing has fashions, these are now "Unfashionable" also no longer competitive for racing but they were worth more than I paid I agree

In the Posh Op Shop (new location 484 Glenhuntly Rd, Elsternwick, VIC) they have about ten brand new Husky brand rain jackets with hoods. They are seam sealed with tags. They are fluorescent yellow and have Victoria Racing Club logos on them. $5 each.

Now that would be highly visible in the snow. Husky brand jackets are notorious for having very short sleeves but still a good buy, why didn't you pick them up?

If you'd picked up an extra XXXL I'd have bought it from you. I like to keep a very visible waterproof in the car and my present jacket is rapidly dieing

Last month I was mooching about looking for pots and pans in the local Brotherhood of St Lawrence opportunity shop when I spied a little bit of blue coloured nylon in a corner. It looked like a flaccid back pack with bits of tape hanging off in all directions. When I picked it up - Eureka- a hardly used at all Aarn Load Limo. All I need now is to buy a pair of the chest packs and it will be complete. All for $8.

Not really an Op Shop but yesterday I saw two person dome tents at Coles at Southland shopping centre (Cheltenham, VIC) on sale for $5. They look about the same or similar to the ones sold at K Mart for $15 but they have mesh doors as well as solid doors. Weight = 1.9 kg.

And yes, I know you wouldn't use them in Alpine or Polar conditions, :-)

Scored an Outdoor Research rain jacket the other day in new condition. Is made from Event and looks like a fairly new model. Think I paid $6 or something for it... Also bought a Kathmandu softshell jacket a few weeks ago. Not the best colour but was only similar money so too good to pass up....

My Local Aunt Sallies has wool blend T-Shirts for $6- each but only in chest size 95 and 100cm
They have about 20 of each, if anybody is interested and your local store doesn't have any of these I'm happy to buy for you and post along. I think 2 will fit in the 500 gram bag
They look quite nice, natural colour and fine smooth finish; labelled "Machine Washable" equal to the lightweight Icebreakers
I also got myself a polyester T-shirt in my size for $6-

Update on the woollen underwear
Some more sizes; larger and smaller in stock locally; check your local stores as I was told these went everywhere and they were now $5-
On another note I just bought one of those little picnic stoves for $5- only to find when I got it home that the label says it is designed to use the picnic canisters with 20% propane mix. I'm wondering if the can actually be used with the iso-Butane canisters?? I don't think I have ever seen the cheap picnic canisters with 20% Propane

Not an Op Shop but Bunnings have 1.2m x 1.8m blue tarps for 50 cents for a two pack. Might be useful for lunch shelter on a day walk or ground sheet - or whatever. The store I saw these in was at Hastings, VIC but I assume they are available in other stores.

Not an op shop, but I was checking out a street market in Vietnam in 2012 whilst waiting for a bus. Got a great condition Gore-tex Paclite jacket for $4. Has served me very well!

Mt Beauty Op-Shop on the way up to Falls Creek
Brand new Pearl Izumi skull cap $0.50 Polyester waffle weave gloves XL suitable for Spring skiing $0.50 Nike windproof mesh lined golf vest $0.50
The vest is surprisingly effective at keeping the core warm and the cap is only 20 grams; fits underneath all of my current headwear and is going to become part of my EDC stuff

Another Op-Shop find
$4
Cheap and nasty Chinese frame pack
Well I thought so until I got it home
Bag and harness are cheap and nasty but the frame actually has possibilities as an Ultra lite alternative to the old MacPac
It's a copy of the Jansport from the 1980s and 350 grams stripped

Heading to the Budawangs recently, I realised that I'd forgotten to pack a spoon. I called into the Mittagong Vinnies where I was delighted to find old spoons for 50 cents a pair. The spoons were taped together and they wouldn't split the tape to sell me just one :)

As always and as usual the Op-Shop in Mt Beauty got a visit on the way up to retrieve my winter stash
Got a kids large Peter Storm chlorofibre top for $1- a UL summer sleeping bag for $3- [ destined to be a hammock under-quilt] and a stupidly warm TNF pile jacket made with a double layer of Polartec 300; again $3-

Locally just now
A good quality older synthetic [ Quallofill] mummy bag made by/for Aurora
Not UL at 1200grams but when Nikwaxed as always very good protection for a LW down bag/ emergency use in the car or as I plan to use it for summercamping as the tadpoles get taller
$3- because the zipper was broken, 5 minutes using some candle wax and a pair of pliers and the zipper works, whip stitching the end so that it wll stay that way; 60 seconds

I'm washing the cheap bag, just ordinary enzyme detergent and the soak water is black, it will be interesting to see if this bag regains any loft after washing and tumble drying
Another thread over on BPL is starting about the rejuvenation of synthetics by doing so, my experience is that it usually helps but not always
