TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

raichle mtn. trail GTX boots

Postby rhyso » Thu 19 Feb, 2009 3:16 pm

hey there all
just after any info on the following subject.
i have a pair of raichle mtn. trail GTX boots, and they are great, well worth the 3.2 million i spent on them.
only one issue, after a while on hard ground the ball of my right foot and the Right side of my foot start to hurt. when i take them off i find the bone on the ball of my foot has a bruise around it/ on it. this does not happen to my left (must be a 'normal' foot)
i feel this may be due to my retarded right foot and was wondering if orthotics would help. Can a podiatrist design orthotics to suit both the boot and your foot?
if so has anyone been to any in tassie? any good comments? whereabouts?
if not has anyone tried any commercial innersoles? i.e. sold at outdoors shops, chemists etc?
thanks for any help as im not sure what to do
cheers

I was getting very sore feet, ball and heel, so sore that it was starting to keep me awake.
I went to the International Foot Clinic in Elizabeth St . Launceston . I got custom orthotics for my walking boots and a new pair of boots for work.
They made an instant improvement.

Was able to claim some of the costs back on private health.

I wear the same boots - and use orthotics in them.

The orthotics i have were the custom ones where they take a plaster impression cast and make a plastic orthotic.

The biggest problem i've had is that it's difficult to get the orthotics to fit many different pairs of shoes well. They are OK in my runners, but uncomfortable in the raichles. I used to get blisters FROM the orthotics (on week+ walks)- so much so that it was preferable to put up with the foot pain than the pain of the blisters.
Since then, i have modified the orthotics to eliminate the hot spots.

When you go to visit the podiatrist, take the boots along. After they make the orthotic make sure that when you stick it in the boot that there are no rub points or uncomfortable areas. This may be tricky coz all new orthotics feel funny at first and you may not instantly recognise a problem area.

A visit to a sports physician may be worthwhile too. If you can strengthen / rehab your foot without having to use orthotics that would be a better way to go.

Hi Rhys,
I have just put a pair of Raichle Mt Trails on layby. Not worn this brand before. Would be interested in how they have gone for you. Most other boots I end up destroying by abrading the seams open. Then they start to let water in between the goretex liner and the outer.
Regarding your foot problem, I am also contemplating a visit to the podiatrist to see what I can do about pain in my achilles when I walk. In the meantime, however, I have tried some sports orthotics which I got from The Athletes Foot. They appear to be very hard and stiff and I was a bit skeptical at first, but after walking with them for four days through the Never Never, I found that they brought immeasurable relief to not only my achilles, but also to one of my knees and to an annoying pain in my lower right back.
I have yet to see whether they will fit in the raichle boot, but will probably try this before visiting a specialist.
Cheers
Andrew

Hi Andrew

I also have a pair of Raichle Trail GTXs. I've found them very comfortable but one of them leaks just as you have described. It may even be a manufacturing fault as other frayed seams aren't leaking (yet), but as I didn't get them wet for about the first 2 years its a bit hard to be sure if its wear or not. So I guess my only advise is to put them in a trough of water and make sure they don't leak as soon as you get them home and probably after the first few walks so that if they are faulty you can easily take them back.

Despite this I still use the boots on all my walks- including day walks most weekends and I've had them since 2005.

cheers
Peter
