Floorless, netless tents. What are your concerns?

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Floorless, netless tents. What are your concerns?

Postby Bushman_Craig » Fri 16 Sep, 2016 11:21 pm

So many people these days seem to shudder at the thought of spending a night out bush in a shelter without a sewn-in floor tub or sewn-in insect net.

Specifically, what would be your concerns about it?

- Heavy rain can induce unexpected water flows that can overwhelm a simple groundsheet.
- Heavy winds can drive rain under the sides of a floorless tent.
- And of course there's the obvious issue with insects.

But the pros often outweigh cons; it depends on where/when you're going.

Snakes, ants, mozzies, spiders, leeches and all sorts of other undesirables that I prefer to be on the outside of my accommodation while I'm in the bush. I've done a few LW bivvy camps with just a fly and a groundsheet......got the bag invaded by a bunch of huntsman spiders one night and the next trip it was heaps of little black stink ants. So for me....a fully enclosed tent is the go but if you want to get really close to nature....or rather have nature really close to you then just sleeping under a fly will probably achieve that. Cheers

Err...yes. All the reasons why tents with insect screens and bathtub floors were invented in the first place.

If I was guaranteed to have a camping site without insects and stormy weather I would consider it. Let me know if you find such a place.

For the comfort. Mozzies love me, even on a windy winters day! My area has ticks, leeches, jumping ants (day time), trap doors and the usual nocturnal critters that I'm pleased to see but I don't want to snuggle up with... Get a centreped up your trousers you'll drop ya dacks pretty quick!

I talked to a hiker who also happened to be a GP and she removed a leech from a friends eyeball. Yikes

Same as what everyone else has mentioned. The benefit as I see it is in conditions where you can trade that weight for something of greater value. For example if temps are near freezing, so bugs are not a concern, you can trade the weight of the net for a bit more insulation.
