Pillans Lake 4437 1:25,000

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Is the digital download from Tasmaps not good enough?
I see the hard copy is print on demand only at $55, ouch!

Hi Robbieb, as a paper map user the digital version is not really useful to me. I guess I could print it out, but the paper the maps are printed on is stable in a range of environments, and I guess photocopy paper expands and contracts. I might be a bit paranoid on this point though!

To follow up your idea of a digital map, how would you use it, say, on a week long walk? What tech would you normally use that allows you to use a digital map please?

EDIT: Ah, and further investigation leads me to GPS. I've never used a GPS, but I recently went on a walk where one of another party had one and showed me some of the functionality. I am a competent navigator with map and compass, so I've never thought of the need to look for an alternative.

I have previously printed the Tasmap digital files with Officeworks onto Tyvek, they supply it. Well worth considering.

For the $2 download would it not be worth getting a copy, then printing it or getting it printed at office works?

@dashandsaph and @robbieb -- yes, good points. You are both right, so I'll down load the digital maps and print them on Tyvek. I think I'll get a few others while I'm at it. Thank you.

I'm curious as to how much the printing costs.

Printed Maps used to be $10 each, but with technology going the way it is they will be the exception rather than the norm

Well, it looks as though TasMap are letting go of the 1:25,000 series and focusing instead on 1:50,000.

I got on of the digital 1:25 000 maps a while ago (forget which on now) and I couldn't even open it, though I suspect that was my Luddite tendencies coming to the fore. I will have to persevere because I prefer these maps to the 1: 50 000.

Same. I prefer the 1:25,000 series (in another life I used to make them!). I've noted that the digital downloads from Tasmap come with a KMZ file that (mostly) open nicely in my Garmin eTrex 20x. One of the Hobart area digital maps I bought won't open because one of the tiles is just larger than 1MB. Annoying, and probably worth reporting to Tasmap I suspect.

Really? Whoa! That's kind of crazy. Pretty sure I bought my copy (along with most of the other Western Lakes 1:25,000s) barely 12 months ago... most likely at Allgoods in Launceston.

I tried one but haven't been able to open it the gps (Garmin Oeregon can't remember model number). It's obviously one of those things that isn't going to be as straightforward as I hoped which is annoying .

The detail in the 1:25s is great but there's simply too many maps. My preference is 1:50, easier to get perspective. It may be too late and/or too old, but I have new Pillans Lake, Cathedral and two Rowallan 1:25, second edition 1984 that are surplus to requirements. In those days the map supply sometimes dried up, and I bought two sets.

If you just want a specific area, for a cheap and quick solution it might be worth looking at whether the print to PDF feature is useful in The List/List Map. It has a number of layers including scanned topo maps and you can zoom in to whatever level is desired. I sometimes use a similar feature in the free NSW online topo map site here, print the output on A4 paper and use a cheap cliplock bag to protect/waterproof my custom "map". Good for day walks.

Not too late Lophophaps. Would you consider selling them please?
