Deuter ACT 40+10 - need replacement metal stays

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Deuter ACT 40+10 - need replacement metal stays

Postby bumpingbill » Sun 11 Dec, 2016 5:43 pm

I've got a Deuter ACT 40+10 pack, which I love.

However the two metal (aluminium) stays that form a cross where it sits on your back have broken. They don't provide as much support now.

Does anyone know where I can get replacements for them? Or something similar?

G'day Bumpy,

Not sure what the stays are that you're referring to. Which ACT is it - Lite, Trail, or Trail Pro. I just had a look at a Lite - that's the only ACT we carry - and there is no metal in the harness at all.

Cheers, Paul

Oh I should have mentioned that! It's a Lite.

These are the bits I'm talking about.

Any aluminium supply shop should have that profile in stock, just cut to length and bent to suit your back, tape the ends so they don't wear a hole in the fabric

The Aussie distributor for Deuter is Velo Vita, http://www.velovita.net.au/
Probably a long shot that they would have spare parts but could be worth an email to their customer service

Ordinary aluminium is very soft and will bend easily. It would most likely need to be a high grade or aircraft grade aluminium to be suitable.
I suggest you go to a Capral industrial supply outlet with your sample. http://www.capral.com.au/

All the rucksacks I have owned except the WE Alpine Expedition have used ordinary soft alloy as stays.
The ideal would be to take one of the old ones that are moulded to the correct comfort shape and make carbon fibre replacements

This is good advice, file the ends down so they nice and round before you tape them as Moondog suggests
you'll be surprised at how cheap it is if you go to a trade supplier of aluminium
