Silicon dots on mat or tent floor?

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Silicon dots on mat or tent floor?

Postby Tortoise » Wed 28 Dec, 2016 8:05 am

I've recently acquired a NeoAir women's xlite, which is substantially slippier than the xtherm - an issue now that I've needed to change my definition of a reasonable tent site.
Is there any disadvantage putting silicon dots (diluted with turps presumably) on the mat instead of the tent floor? Then it doesn't matter which tent I'm in.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I've been thinking the same thing for ages, but never taken the plunge. My only concern is the compatibility of the plastics involved

I actually use a small section of lightweight non slip matting that I got from Bunnings. It has a few possible uses, and weighs very little.

HI Simon,
I used to use that, but never got it working ideally. How wide a piece to you use, and how do you keep it in place? (There's me slipping on the mat, and the mat slipping on the tent floor.)
Might be worth another shot.

I found a piece about 15 cm wide, and long enough to do a fair part of the top and part of the bottom. I realised that one of the straps around my mat for the quilt should do nicely to keep it in place. The challenge comes when wrapping self around several clumps of button grass or the like - quite 3 dimensional. :? I'll let you know how it goes.

I put dots on my own silnylon tent floors as a matter of course.

However if using multiple tents (as I do with Scouts), silicon on base of mat is definitely way to go.

I put silicone stripes (not diluted) on floor and on mat - at right angles to each other. Works fine.
Cheers

Thanks a lot for your thoughts everyone.
Yours sounds the most effective for the very challenging tent sites, Roger. About how many stripes have you used? I'm not wanting to add any more weight than I need to, but obviously the more I use the more effective it'd be.
