TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

How I make a Tarp Terra Rosa Gear

Fri 06 Jan, 2017 5:05 pm

Happy New Year to the Forum !

Here is an 7 minute video showing the process of how I make the Tarps at Terra Rosa Gear.

vimeo - https://vimeo.com/196794273

youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTJC40OxhI0&t=67s

Now to nerd out with the sweet specs here.

Machine : Juki double needle with needle feed ( the needles move) This is awesome when sewing the lightweight materials like sil poly and sil nylons.

Tarp: 2x3 Wilderness Tarp

Materials. 20d silpoly

Main seam: Lapped Seam

Sides: Rolled hem double stitched

Tie out: Acetate Triangle ( D ring style)

Location: my workshop in Melbourne and Mt Feathertop in the Vic Alps

Have a awesome and safe year of adventures.

Cheers,

Evan

Hi Evan,
Any comments on the difference for you between 30d silnylon and 20 d silpoly ?
Are you still working in Lt Bourke St ?

I still can't work out how sometime I can upload a you tube video directly and other times I cannot.
I tried but failed with yours...( nice video...)

Should this thread be in market square?

Could be in the DIY too given that Evan show us how to do it.
But this is the section most read, I think.

Twin needle sewing machine!

Enjoyed the vid. Glad to see it, more cottage makers should share their processes.

There is expertise, materials and machinery that makes the process valuable and interesting for walkers.

Thanks Folks! I was wanting it to capture the workshop and process and am happy how it came out.

Franco. Im not in Lt Burke these days. You're more than welcome to come by the workshop sometime. (that goes for anyone else as well)
In terms of the material. I have been really liking the 20d sil poly lately. The less stretch is noticeable and can make getting a taught nylon like pitch a little more difficult sometime but once its done its less maintenance if its a wet night. The 20d sil nylon is still a go to for me as the strength is something I like to have. Happy to deal with bits of sag and the strikes that come up against sil nylons (some times just and some times not ;-) )

Thanks Evan.
I used to work at Camera Action (21 years) so spent a lot of time in those Lt Bourke St shops.
Tarptent has started using 30d from a different source. Still silnylon (non PU) but with a higher waterhead .
Henry has been fiddling with several types of fabrics but we are not confident as yet going lower than 30d.

I like watching how stuff is made [ that double sewing thing was especially cool ]

So, now I have a better understanding of the craft involved, I'm sold! A Prospecting tarp for me, I'll organize when I'm back from the salt mines.

Thanks for posting this Evan. Your craftsmanship was a pleasure to watch.

Is there a reason you made your own lap seam folder? Just because you could, or was there a technical/supply issue?

I was lucky enough to have a guided tour of the workshop that manufactures some very nice gear......thanks for taking time out Evan.

I was able to try a quilt as well......just thinking I should have taken Evan up on his offer.

Late this arvo I spotted some of his tarps in shop in the CBD.

Oh and the craftsmanship in the workshop below was neat as well.

Sorry for the delayed reply but thank you to everyone.

I made my own as I wanted a few specifics to run the sil materials through. I have a commercial one that is good for the heavier side of things like corduras and japaras etc.

Yeah Lt Bourke is a fun place to kill an afternoon and some dollars. :D I hear where hes coming from. For a full shaped tent with poles I would stick with a 30d silnylon as well.

Evan/HitchHiking,

Thanks for posting that video.

As an often **fail** DIY-er I appreciate seeing it done professionally.

Cheers!
