The poly tarp stayed in place for maybe two months each year, and we got at least a couple of years out of it before it expired. I'm not sure, but I think we had the side edges tied off to additional horizontal natural timber poles a little above ground level. Memory may be unreliable on the side poles. Site was well protected from wind, which yours probably wont be. That setup coped very well with a couple of light snowfalls, but again almost certainly not as heavy as you will be planning for.
