TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Mont Icicle question

Postby Moondog55 » Thu 03 May, 2018 10:04 am

It's been a while since I last wore one but I think I really need a warm duvet for this winter.
I'm wondering if the fit and attention to detail has changed much since Mont went to China to have their gear made?
The last time I borrowed one to check out the fit and warmth I thought that they were smaller and less generous then I remembered them but they have some 3XL in the pipeline and I am thinking of reserving one.
I'm considering the 3XL because of my intended trip to Alaska in 2020 and the need to cope with very low temperatures and it looks like a 3XL will layer neatly over my Patagucci DAS which in XL just fits me as a warm midlayer over fleece and underwear.
Still waiting on replies to my inquiry with Mont as to actual garment dimensions
Thinking of Mont to keep some of my bushwalking dollars here in Australia, and wearing another layer rather than buying an 8000metre parka at double the cost

The Icicle is a great jacket and I drool over it every time I'm in the shop here in Canberra.

I think the quality of their gear is inline with the rest of the outdoor market if not better. I would say it is comparable to Acrteryx in construction and build quality. I do think Mont stuff can be quite overbuilt/designed though but that's the minimalist in me.

once again I think their sizing is inline with other brands. I usually wear a medium and this is true for Mont stuff.

Keep in mind that Mont have their huge sale in Canberra toward the end of May and the Icicle can definitely be had for 50% off.

When you say medium are you trying it on over winter layers of base + windshirt and fleece?

For their Fusion down jacket I would wear a fleece underneath and the medium would fit perfectly.

Anybody who needs something this specialised and large should get in quickly; there will be a very limited number of these available, apparently most are already allocated to ANARE.
I am a little shocked that I have spent this much money; it cost more than my new combination sleeping system but in real terms about the same as the old MD
when consideration is given to inflation

I can't even give the old MD parka away so it may well end up being used as a midlayer under the Icicle, thinking I'll just take about a hundred grams of down from it and restitch the seams adding an elasticated tube cuff at the wrist
