I quite like my gear. I have either a TT Protrail, or an STS 3x3 tarp, is great but not good for tic & leech country.

What is your ideal shelter?

My ideal is something like an Exped Orion 3p (heavy) or a Big Sky Mirage (discontinued).

If only Tarptent made a dome. Single layer with a bit ó mesh, optional 2 or 3 poles exoskeleton design.

TT Protrail in DCF. No Silnylon sag in the morning wetting out your bag and lighter.

I asked TT about it and there response was "probably never". So I'm moving towards using DCF Tarps now.

Yes but I found wiping off the condensation before sitting upright works. Height is an issue with that tent.

Anything that will allow me to stand up and stretch in the morning, that is also winter storm proof and able to handle an extreme snow load and massing less than 8 kilos

Can't think of anything I would prefer to my TT Notch in DCF. It is light, double wall, has sufficient space & headroom (for me), handles bad weather well and is quick and easy to pitch.

Possibly this one, but with a 2/3 solid inner (mesh for the top 1/3) and its own poles included.

Something like a WE Second Arrow in DCF. I like to have a bit of room.

It has to be able to handle strong winds, heavy rain, snow, being pitched on rock or wet or roughish ground, breathe well. Must have a vestibule big enough to store the pack, boots and any wet clothing while cooking. Must be double wall and integral/fly first pitch. Not that I'd be able to afford something like that if it was ever made, but this is the stuff of which dreams are made.

The Durstanator 1.5 (2?) person DCF. That would be OK.

Are butterfly wings waterproof or just water resistant?

It doesn't matter. Your tent simply flies to a location where it's not raining.

A tropical tent, currently none being made. Mid level quality, freestanding, smallish footprint, highish water rating floor and fly, lightweight, dual vestibule for airflow, inner being old school mosquito weave mesh also for airflow( instead of the breeze blocking noseeum everything has these days). Olive drab colour, no gimmicks or extras aka torch holders, fluorescent guylines or logos. Under $250 so I don't get upset when it moulds or rots.

My 'ideal' tent is completely unrealistic, physically impossible and completely unachievable - pure fantasy... But I can dream.

Probably something like a bombproof 4 season Hilleberg Saitaris (perhaps slightly reduced in size to a more cosy 3person tent - not 4) that weighs a total of 1kg or less (currently weigh about 6.7kgs!) It would have to pack down into the size of a 1litre Nalgene bottle (currently they almost need their own backpack!) Of course it would be almost instant 30sec pop-up and about 30sec packup. The rear wall would be convertible into a full panoramic, ventilating summer mesh 'window' - and/or alternative door with a small rain awning for warm summer nights and views but can be simply and completely re-jigged/sealed into a tough, full, bomb-proof 4 seasons/snow shelter. There would be a strong, removable suspended 'loft' for gear hanging from the ceiling and ample pockets around the interior walls. Would have a lifetime guarantee on damage, repairs and replacement - but it wouldn't need them as it would be so tough and not get damaged even in the most wicked blizzards. Dream on Stew

I used to see many threads about using polycryo for tent/tarp material.
Not so much now.
Maybe people started to get the difference between stuff that works in the backyard and stuff that works in the bush.

My Trailstar or Terra Rosa tarp 10x10, decent bug bivvy….
