TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Portable Gas stove - Butane

Sun 09 Dec, 2018 8:56 pm

I'm trying to put together a small gas stove for travelling. It will run on Butane gas cylinders.
I'll put down what I intend to use so far but I've run into a problem. I can't find an adapter to attach the hose to the bottom of the gas stove.

This is the stove.

And I want to attach this hose to it.

I will attach one end of this hose to a Butane Cylinder using one of these adapters.

I want to use the Aerosol can version of butane cylinders rather than the short expensive type. I don't want to do any refilling either.
Is there an adapter for this kind of thing.

I'm going to make the tripod legs myself in case anyone is wondering.
Thanks

Simplest solution:

with

Job done - includes support legs ... everything but the gas cyclinders.

Or maybe something like this: https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?ca ... pter+stand

These are on the shelf at Anaconda stores now so should be easy to get, about $20 or so and fit it any hike stove. Have used mine numerous times with my Soto stove:

That hose doesn't work. I got one and it won't fit any adapter on the market Go with the unit sold here at Anaconda/BCF and pay the few extra dollars.
The problem with a lot of the cheap Chinese adapters is that they leak after a short while or they roll over and gas won't come out.
The best adapter is from G-Works or Kovea in Korea but about $45- landed after postage and GST

What you are looking for is a unit called the Cobra made by Kovea. http://kovea.com/product/cobra-adaptor/

I have one that I would be willing to part with.

It looks small as I'm looking for. I may just go with this in the end but I was attracted to the really small version I showed you. It's the attachment which is the problem.

Yes they are, but I can get the identical thing on aliexpress for $5-6.

I don't like the design of these at all. They're heavy, chunky and the base is made of plastic. I looked at this at Anaconda and also didn't like the fact that the bottle
is held so close to the stove. That fitting is not air tight either which makes it a little dangerous.

Thanks for that tip. I don't like allot of the chinese cheaper adapters but the solid (orange) adapter I put up would probably be my best bet. If I can't get the adapters I want (which is what they want), I'll have to go with something premade.

I just don't want to be a slave to the expensive dome canisters when I can get a butane cylinder a 1/5 of the price and it holds just as much.

These are online too. Ebay and Aliexpress. it would solve the problem but I don't like the wide legs. I'll need something more compact with that but there's nothing to say that I can't trip the legs off and put some folding ones on there.

Think the legs swivel on the base, so they all pack together - probably along the hose line and that would protect its junction.

Hi Moondog, thanks for that! I'm still thinking about how to go about this so I'll let you know.
I was looking at all this stuff 6 months ago but gave up because of the adapter issue. Might be quicker for me to buy a lathe and make one myself :)

The legs on the Kovea Cobra do fold - both the legs on stove attachment and the canister attachment. It is important that the canister is oriented correctly or you will get a liquid butane feed.

Update - Moondog has purchased it.

Dom, I have to put my Soto on quite firm but no leak/danger.
The canister my appear close but the flame is at the top of the stove and heat rise. Butane cans actually get cool as they dispense.
I'm totally happy with the safety of mine. Is also very stable. Cheers

The Cobra adapter is better constructed than the cheap Chinese ones sold on Ali-Express but they are heavy. It isn't a LW unit.
I want it for picnic use for the car and for car camping when solo.
I have an older Kovea stove to use with it

Thanks Neo! I'm thinking along the lines of a Cobra adapter now. They seem to be the most compact I can find.

That's interesting. It looks light weight but I'm assuming the Cobra adapter is a heavier metal than the cheaper ones.
I didn't realise the legs folded like they do. I think I'll go for something like this. It will solve all my problems in one.

The better solution is simpler
Get a remote stove such as the FireMaple Blade as I did. You soon forget the dollars spent as this type of stove is simple and lighter

I just weighed my cheap Chinese adapter. 140 grams
