BIG 4

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.
Forum rules
TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Recently updated and largely geared towards family orientated bushwalking and camping. Opportunity for solo camping... Near zilch! But Mr12 (soon Mr13) is getting stronger and can start to share the load. That's a positive!

Pack: Aarn Peak Aspiration L (45L) + Balance Pockets Reg (15L) - 1570g + 500g
Tent: Exped Gemini III - 2800g
Bag: Mountain Hardwear Lamina 45 or UltraLamina 32 - 710g/870g
Pad: Exped SynMat 7 UL Small - 405g
Just move it!

Tent - Hilleberg Soulo (seems to be fairly popular.)
Pack - Deuter Aircontact 65+10
Bag - Kathmandu navigator v6 (actually fairly decent)
Mat - exped synmat (with a concrete for 4 season use - I would like an xtherm though.)

So around 7kg - probably more than less
If something is jammed, force it. If it breaks, it needed fixing anyway.

Pack: Deuter Aircontact 65 + 10
Tent: Hilleberg Anjan 3
Bag: Denali Capsule 300
Mat: Exped Downmat UL 7 LW

Not a lightweight setup, but very comfortable! I think I might get a smaller pack (50L?) for shorter walks, which will help cut out some weight (the Deuter is around 2.7kg I think!)

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life and add in my Big 4:

Pack - Osprey Ariel 65L (2.15kg)
Tent - TarpTent Notch (780g)
Bag - Kathmandu Moonraker Goose Down (1.5kg). This bag is 15yrs+ old, not sure of the rating but it was purchased for a trip to Nepal and is very warm.
Mat - Exped DownMat UL 7 M (615g).

I'm currently researching quilts as it is time to find a lighter bag option.

Cool, yeah this thread should be stickied I reckon. Great to see what other people are rocking.

This is my 3-4 season set up:

Pack: Crux AK-47X (size 3, 1250g)
Shelter: Tarptent Cloudburst 3 (pending) (under 1500g I hope)
Sleeping bag: Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20, long/wide (670g)
Mat: Exped Synmat UL 7 LW (600g)

Total 4020g

KANANGRABOYD wrote:Sleeping bag: Enlightened Equipment Revelation Top Quilt or (soon hopefully!!! a STS Spark III )

Kanangra: Why the Spark III over the EE Revelation? It's heavier and not as warm as a Rev 20.

Large Thermarest NeoAir Xlite mat (460g)
Western Mountaineering Alpinlite bag (the long version... 935g)
Cascade 90 pack (very durable, but heavy... bit over 3kg!)
Mont Moondance II tent (2kg)

Also agree this thread should be a sticky :D

OK - ya got me ! I'll play !!

One Planet Mungo 2515g
W/M Apache 1041g
Exped D/M UL 7 M 625g (Surely these would win some sort of poll around here ??)
H'berg Akto 1650g

Total 5831g

This is all a bit of a moving feast. I am going to start using a O/P Shadow with this stuff which will save 775g. O/P are supremely comfortable for me, and I like canvas.

Bag, tent, and pack can all be warmer, stronger, heavier if I look like needing it.

Re: BIG 4

Postby headwerkn » Mon 11 Nov, 2013 8:36 am

Current setup for 2-up hiking with my girlfriend:

Pack: Mountain Designs Tracker 70L, circa 2004. Robust but heavy at 2.5KG est. weight. Rather narrow too, which makes packing interesting. Would like to update to something lighter and more user friendly in due course.

Tent: Snowgum Storm Shelter II. Great 4-season tent, bombproof in strong winds and blizzards though can be stuffy on warm nights in summer. Heavy at 3.2KG and a bit bulky too. Looking to replace it with an MSR Hubba Hubba NX shortly (1.6KG).

Sleeping Bag: Roman Adventure Ultra-Lite 0-degree Synthetic. Compact and reasonably light (1.4KG) in its compression sackbut not very warm (and I'm a warm sleeper). Too tight around the shoulders, lousy zip (jams constantly) and generally not very comfortable to sleep in. During the summer months I use it more as a quilt. Old and starting to fall apart, so looking to upgrade to a quality lightweight goose-down bag as soon as funds allow, considering either One Planet Zephyr or perhaps a quilt-type hoodless-bag currently.

Sleeping Mat: MacPac Air Core Std Length (~500gr). Love it - very comfortable, warm, packs down to nothing and much cheaper than equivalent Thermarest inflated pads ($132 versus $200+). Replaced a Thermarest Prolite which as a mostly-side sleeper was just too uncomfortable on firmer ground. Looked at the various NeoAir models but everything people say about them being noisy is totally true; I turn a lot in my sleep and the rustling noise would have driven my partner and I both utterly insane.

Cheers, Ben.

I can finally post my Big 4 as there will be no significant changes in the next few months.
Image

I can add either a mesh/Cuben inner for a 2p 2layer tent for an extra 450g or just take a groundsheet.

I also have a 3.5kg macpac cascade for off track walking where there will be excessive thorns/scoparia.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

That's odd. Why is your moment lighter than spec? Also have you weighed your bag cause WM sleeping bags never come in on spec weight in my experience.

Why is your moment lighter than spec?
Same reason why mine also is. It is the Moment not the Moment DW (Double Wall)
The original Moment was a hybrid shelter having the floor and door wall attached to the fly. The new version is made of two separate parts, inner and fly, they set up together.
