Thermarest XTherm - when is it available?

Last I heard, the new XTherm mattress was supposed to be available in January this year (ie, any day now?). Does anyone know of any further information on this? I was hoping to get one before my next big trip, which is coming up in a few weeks, but it seems that might not be an option.

I emailed CampSaver about it and they told me they expect to have the Xtherm in stock "within a month or two". A bit later than I was hoping for but still not too far away. There is still the obstacle of Thermarest not being allowed to be sold internationally from the States but I am sure that will be overcome.

Before committing to the Xtherm you may want to consider the NeoAir XLites (3 sizes with improved R of 3.2). They have also added a womens XLite which has a boosted R rating of 3.9, size 168x51x6.3 and only 320 grams. I think this will be the mat for me; long enough to consider it a full length mat (I am 180) and only 50 grams more than my old NeoAir short which now has 150 nights and slowly deflates over the course of the night - can't find a leak. I really would prefer the XTherm over the XLite for the greater R value. I can't afford multiple mats, so I need to buy one that I can use all year round, anywhere in Tasmania. So that includes on snow.

The Neo Air All Season is heaps warm enough (R4.9), only just over 500g, available now, and I bet it's way cheaper than the flagship XTherm will be. Just an option for a man in a hurry

The All Season is good too. My understanding is that the XTherm is just an All Season with the corners cut off to save weight.

The latest Wild magazine had the Xtherm as available. The comments looked like the press release from Thermarest courtesy of the local supplier Spelean. I went to the Spelean website - nothing - just a referral to the CascadeDesigns website.

Why bother putting out the press release if you are not going to support the product? If Spelean wants sole import rites, I feel that they should support the consumer a bit better.

The All Season is good too. My understanding is that the XTherm is just an All Season with the corners cut off to save weight.

Found this on BPL - From Cascade Design................

"Due to intense demand for the Xlite, the Xtherm has been pushed back and will be tentatively released in April. The regular size will weight 15oz and all sizes have an R valuve of 5.7. Let me know if you have any other questions. "

On a more general note, it can be worthwhile checking out UK sites for the major US brands especially if you have somebody over there who can send on your gear. You lose the savings on the VAT when you direct export but the postage is often cheaper and the UK retailers don't seem to be so caught up in export restrictions as US retailers so you can often buy at around US prices.

For example Webtogs (UK) (Exchange rate 1.5) has the Thermarest All Seasons for AU$169.00 including the 20% VAT (ex Vat AU$135). BackCountry Gear (US) (Exchange rate 1) has them at $140. Paddy's has them on special at $243 ($221 before GST just to ensure we are comparing apples with ...). Spelean does seem to be creaming a rather generous wholesale margin - but that's no secret!

Looks like it is AUD $165 at the moment, including postage.

I generally buy online from the UK now. While the prices are slightly dearer, the postage costs are not ridiculously high like they are from the states so it works out pretty much the same. And you don't run into the "can't ship these brands to Australia" problem.

Postage from the UK generally takes 5 business days max, I have received one item from this store in three days (orderd Tuesday received Friday). Postage from the states can take anywhere up to a month.

They arent available from Dicks or anywhere else from what I can find. Backcountry lists them on back order due as noted up the page a bit.
Few days ago I gave up, tried to buy the three season 'Limon' 2011 Neoair from a number of places where it was in stock, but which all locked me out with the 'we dont ship to' message regardless of them saying they ship to Asia region (lisiting Aus).
Gave up again and bought from the only store on Ebay who shipped Aus, using USPS. Hopefully .... This is blood out of a stone stuff.

Ps... SouthAus, we get a fair bit of cycling stuff from over pom and the experience is similar. Your reference would probably have been a better place to purchase with less messing, and five bucks cheaper, but I wasnt in here looking round. Ive bookmarked it, thanks.

Ive been using the neo all-season for a few weeks. I still think the lightest neo model along with a couple of short thin (2/3mm) cc foam mat/s is a better system, especially in the snow. The original models are also getting cheaper and will last as long (if not longer with a solid undermat). No doubt that the all season is warmer but it didn't seem to be 'warm', just 'not cold' at around zero. Not a huge diff noticed over the yellow mats or trekker model by me. The yellow mats were easier to patch.

Unfortunately US retailers web sites indicate they send to aus, and generally they do, but specific product close outs still apply.
Where 'Spleen' sends them at two hundred and eighty odd, plus delivery is anyones guess.

I camped on snow last week using just the neoair all seasons, and found I slept well each night with only a WM summerite (rated to 0 degrees C) and some down clothing. temps dipped down to around -5 and would say its definitely warmer than the original neoair where I'd feel the cold at around zero degrees.

Even if the the Xtherm is no warmer than the all seasons but can shed some weight, it'd be the mat to get.

Stands to reason, not reflecting much heat but blocking the heat sink, I guess there is only so much warmth felt rather than cold not felt.
My thoughts are more that a thin CC mat is a handy thing to have around and won't puncture, same for the neo sitting on one..

Simple process really.

It does look good though at US$149.95, tack on freight and I bet it'll still be cheaper than buying here, when it's available.
