powdered alcoholic beverage

Postby wayno » Tue 22 Apr, 2014 10:07 am

Humans have been enjoying alcohol for thousands of years in a variety of forms, but one aspect has always remained constant: it was liquid. Inventor Mark Phillips has created a product that could revolutionize what we think about cocktails and gives a whole new meaning to ‘dry martini’: powdered alcohol. The product, called Palcohol, has just gained approval from the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).

They're mighty coy as to the ingredients. How could it be just ethanol and be powdered?

95% ethanol is pretty light to begin with, relatively speaking. But tasty it's not. I prefer good strong whiskey. You Tasmanians have a very nice selection to choose from, albeit taxed quite severely. When I visit I bring a liter or two from home.

It's only 58% alcohol by weight. I imagine the rest is binders to keep it solid at room temperature.

If you could get your hand on undiluted scotch, fresh from the still, you could mix it with fresh spring water for a lightweight, tasty drink.

Have a look at BPL, it's being discussed over there too: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin ... d_id=90180

So it isn't any lighter than Bacardi 151 and it's actually heavier than Everclear. Just another marketing scam.

Wouldn't it be easier to just do without recreational drugs while you're out bush? Or is that too radical a notion?

It's medicine! It's also food energy roughly equivalent in kJ/g of many bushwalking snacks.

I've done trips without and that's okay, but I personally find it nice to have a little nip at the conclusion of a long day.

Well, on the topic of recreational drugs, one bad weather day in an unnamed tassie range there was some 'interesting' smells of smoke coming out of the tent next door....

Yeah, that's basically my attitude.
Mind, I've been on one or two walks where a little light 'relief' at the end of a long hard day would have been very welcome . . .

ah yes..sitting at the bottom of Apsley Gorge, rocks pinging off the cliffs at regular intervals and little landslips sliding down the slopes, camping under a protective rock ledge, nerves rattling as loudly as the rocks until…a swig of Cointreau and suddenly that Gorge looked beautiful, sublime, awesome, stunning, one more sip and I even managed to sleep the whole night.

well, it is quite syrupy and a heavy liquid but once decanted from its thick glass bottle into a lightweight plastic flask lets just say it was worth the effort...
