Dehydrated food storage?

Postby Snowzone » Sat 15 Jun, 2013 3:45 pm

Having just developed the skill of dehydrating my own meals I have got a bit carried away and now have a few more meals than I am going to use in the near future.
So what is the best way for long term storage? And how long should meals be stored for before being past the 'not sure if I should consume this' stage.

I vacuum pack mine and throw them in the bottom of the freezer for good measure.

I put them in ziplock bags and remove all the air, then put them in the freezer like Neil. Inside my freezer door it has a guide as to how long different types of food can be stored frozen. If they are dehydrated properly then they should last absolutely ages (longer than the freezer guide) depending on the ingredients. So no meat or dairy could probably last up to a year. I made a big batch of dehy minestrone soup in January and haven't used it all up yet. It still looks fine.

Thanks Neil and Simone, I have them currently stored in ziplock bags in the fridge so will move them to the freezer. Does anyone find they ice up if stored in the freezer? Has anyone noticed any effect on the quality of the meal when rehydrated after being stored in the freezer for awhile?
One of my batches was minestrone as well, I had an over supply of vegetables from my garden and a good soup always seems like a good way to use them up.

DEFINATELY vacuum seal them. Worth every penny in buying one, and you can get bulk sealing plastic/bags online that are cheaper than in shops.

pork curry and beef mince were fine after 8 months in zip lock bags in an airtight plastic container in the freezer
