Vege supplies?

Postby pastavore » Fri 06 Sep, 2013 2:38 pm

I'm just getting back into bushwalking again, now the kids are getting big enough. But not big enough to carry their sure of stuff, so I'm really pursuing the freezerbag style cooking (simple stove, no washing up, dehdrated food)

My issue is I can't find a reasonable range of dehydrated vege's to buy. Mash potato, peas and mushrooms seems to be the limit at my local supermarkets. Can you buy a greater variety of veges, and if so where?

OH, and at the moment have not the space, time or inclination to DIY with a dehydrator.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Is this for you or for the kids?
If for the tadpoles then stick with what they would eat at home as much as possible, for your self just get used to Deb and surprise peas again in the short term
It it's only short weekend walks I still take as much fresh stuff as I can
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart

In Tassie I buy dried vegies from a 'wholefoods' health food store, if I've been too slack to dry my own. There's tomatoes, tomato flakes (yay!), red & green capsicum, carrot and maybe a couple of others.

Hey corvus, it's pretty handy at Fourways Devonport! I think it's called Help Yourself Wholefoods in Oldaker St.

No idea, sorry! Looks like a very small business. But I'd be pretty surprised if there wasn't something similar available in Melb. Might be worth ringing around.

Strive Food makes a good pack of dehy complimentary vegetables. I use them to add to most of my meals when walking beyond fresh food

Also Chinese food shops have a good variety of dried veggies but they may contain sulphur :(

Most city's have at least one organic supermarket/co-op but honestly.. for just vegies.. some frozen bags on oven trays. It couldn't be a lot easier/ definitely more variety..

I really like Strive Foods stuff, but seriously... Why do they add sugar to dried vegetables? Surely this is one thing that's expected to be healthy and they add one of the most unhealthy foodstuffs known to man. So unnecessary! Disappointed.

I met someone who said they got veggies dehydrated from a guy up in Qld. I think it was online... can't remember what it was called!
Anyone know of something similar?

Sorry for the necro

Presumably so that they retain their colour.
