HIRING DEHYDRATORS IN SYDNEY

PostPosted: Tue 21 Jan, 2014 7:22 pm

Hello!
I am very excited to be going on the OLT this February and I have just come across the endless benefits of dehydrating food!! (Slow on the epiphany, I know...)
I would like to give it a go but don't want to invest in a dehydrator only to use it once and then watch it collect dust.
Does anyone have any idea where I could hire/rent/borrow/beg for a good quality one in Sydney to give it a go for this trip?
Thanks in advance!!

Hey Hornsby
I am on the north Side of Sydney, send me a PM if that works for you - you can borrow mine for a few weeks.
BTW Aldi has them most years (think they had them recently) for about $40.

Matt :)

That's how the message system works Horneby, when the person reads the message it leaves your outbox.
I had the same thing early on and thought the message was stuck too. :)

A dehydrator is good value and you don't need to spend a sqillion on them. Mine cost about $100.00
and has been good value.

Try the kind of mesh bag that fruit comes in, hung out in the sun.

After 1 or more trips according to dehydrator price, the food cost savings will outweigh the dehydrator purchase price.

You can dehydrate food in any oven. I have successfully dehydrated meals in my conventional wall mount oven as well as in our LG convection/microwave oven.
I also have access to and used our Scout group Harvest maid dehydrator.

Basically all give the same result.

In times of high demand I have considered bying a dedicated dehydrator myself, but then the wall oven and LG microwave do just as good a job and are available most of the time.

Something to consider.

Hi Bruce. What settings do you put your oven on?

I tried to dehydrate pasta in my oven and burnt it! I suggest very very very low temps. (I now have a dehydrator - bought it off the internet at $169 and it feeds a family of five).

Ive done jerky in a standard oven before with no issues. About 80 degrees with the door cracked over half a day or so. Havnt tried anything else but should give it a go

What are people using to package their meals once dried? Vacuum sealed bags make sense but I imagine they will melt when you put boiling water in.

Coffee bean bags?

I could transfer contents to pot but would prefer to use the bag I carry the meals in.
