Best tasting coffee / Hot chocolate sachets

Postby Moondog55 » Sun 21 Sep, 2014 10:30 am

I bought the Safeway home brand last week and while they are adequate for a survival kit item they don't really taste like real coffee.
So opinions on what people may have tried so I don't waste my money trying dozens of different tyeps
We normally drink strong plunger coffee here at home and I drink mine V-strong V-sweet and milky.
In my normal camping mug I need 3 of the Safeway sachets for a decent brew BTW as they are made for a nominal 150/200ml cup

Weekend trips I usually make 5ml of strong espresso and carry it, and on longer trips I will take ibuprofen.
I have in the past made cowboy coffee which tastes just like plunger coffee. \
Americans swear by starbucks VIA.

I like the Robert Timms coffee bags. They taste a little better to me than instant but still avoid the hassle factor of brewing a cup.

We drink plunger but I was asking about the "All-in-one" sachets specifically. The quick and easy when cold and wet option that used to be handled by the Nestle tubes that are getting harder to find

I'm a semi reformed coffee snob, at home I've had Krups expresso machines and now a Kogan fully automatic machine - grinds beans and makes expresso and I start the day with a double shot. For many years I refused to drink instant coffee and would drag a stove top expresso maker out into the bush or brew strong 'cowboy coffee' with a tea strainer to catch the grounds. After a few overseas trips to China, Japan and the USA where finding a good expresso coffee is very challenging and mostly impossible I discovered I can live without coffee (and now go cold turkey in these countries rather than drink bad coffee)

However my return to instant coffee for camping started with the Moccona Cappuccino sachets (long skinny packets) and now I've switched to the Moccona Iced coffee sachets, I can't drink super hot drinks anyway and the Iced Coffee saves having to heat water in the morning on a walk. I consider these coffee flavoured drinks rather than true coffee but they work for me as a way to start the day.

The starbucks via are only good compared to north american instant coffee, which no one actually drinks. but if you like sweet, the sweet ones are that. They are not bad, but they are not better than anything else you could make.

I have a small Portion Control tube of Folgers here if anybody is interested in tasting how bad American instant coffee can be.
I'll try these Safeway "Latte" over the next week and then try the Moccona after that I may get used to Caterers Blend again after all

Millicano wholebean instant Cart Noire is well worth checking out ( especially when it it is on sale at 1/2 price) normally I never drink instant coffee have use the Robert Timms bags on the track however this is the closest to real coffee that I have found and well worth sampling :)

All instant coffee is a big disappointment unless you're just hoping for something hot, black and bitter that you can pour sugar, milk or hot chocolate mix into. I've tried a bunch of them and think the Starbucks is the least worst. When bushwalking in Tasmania I grab whatever is at the hotel I'm staying at. Of the Australian brands I slightly prefer Robert Timms. But honestly, they all taste like something that isn't really coffee.

Try tasting a few of them black, side by side.

Ditto on this and they have great flavors as well, frothy choc, peppermint choc and my two faves hazelnut or orange flavored chocolate. The weight is good with these sachets and they actually taste as though there is milk in them.

Love my coffee but in the weeds I drink black tea with lots of sugar and a squirt of lemon and before bed a milo - water and sugar no milk.

Drink tea instead.
But I do like the Jarrah Hot Chocies. My fave is the mint one... of course a dash of something a bit stronger added is always good too.

I make up my own hot chocolate mixes with powdered full cream milk and drinking chocolate in a zip lock bag. Choose the drinking chocolate to your taste and refine the quantity to suit - about 1,000 kJ so a good part of the day's energy requirements.

I usually switch to tea - Earl Grey or Lemon Scented - when walking but occasionally take espresso ground coffee and just brew it cowboy style. No adulterants for either - just black and bitter like my .......

I'm coffee addicted at home, with various coffee machines....nespresso currently....but in the bush, I just deal with a strong Marcona instant brew. It's just not worth the trouble for me trying to get a great morning coffee.....would rather spend the effort on the "sacred pillow" issue for a good night's sleep.

On the instant coffees I am a strong coffee drinker and I've found the Starbucks Italian instant pretty good. I also have a GSI dripolater style fabric funnel which makes good coffee and is very light but a bit messy but my favourite is the Aero Press which is a giant plunger with a filter paper on the end, about 40mm in diameter, which makes excellent coffee and is very easy to use and empty, though at 228g its a bit heavy (though not for the serious junkies).

Still chuckling over that.
I've conquered my caffeine addiction (Coke, not coffee, was/is my poison of choice), but can still remember the withdrawal symptoms on some walks . . . sometimes I would take a 600ml bottle on the first day and make it last an hour or so whilst walking. I found that somehow reduced the succeeding days' physical cravings.

Won't suit everyone but I use these Nescafe 3 in 1 Original Coffee Sachets:
http://www.nescafe.com/product_details_en_com.axcms?Id=74

I use these at work as well and get them in a 30 pack for $6-99 from an Asian supermarket chain at the Westfield shopping centre nearby. Used them on a 3 day bushwalking trip the other weekend and on many previous trips. I like these because they're quick and easy and I don't need to carry milk or sugar. It's not the same as the coffee I make at home with the espresso machine and grinding my own beans but they'll do for the bush and the taste is not too bad (for me). I think the ones I get are sourced from Indonesia and sometimes come with a bonus gift. The last three included collectable coffee mugs from the recent soccer world cup.

Tea just doesn't hit the spot for me in the morning and hot chocolate is too cloying. It's got to be something bitter. If I can manage I take the Aeropress and mini grinder with some quality beans but usually just go with Starbuck's instant and a bit of sugar. If not that then (rather than ibuprofen) I swallow a caffeine pill and some naproxyn.

I personally don't have any withdrawal if I skip the caffeine but I like the little boost. It gets the motor running, opens my eyes, loosens things up. Ha ha. Caffeine pills mostly work just fine for that but I really wish somebody could make a decent instant.

As a tea drinker I think it really beats any other Instants I have tried so for an outlay of $3.99 for ten one cup sticks you can sample it and judge .

Maybe Cecile and I should just get that vacuum packer and pack my own mix, that way I get as much of each ingredient in a sachet as I need for my morning "KICK"start. I tried them again over this week and they are not that good a value as I need 4 sachets in my big army kidney cup and it still isn't sweet or strong enough. Bonus moment tho, someone left some army ration pack ingredients at PV hut, including ca tube of condensed milk and a tube of Nestle Coffee n Milk in a tube, I thought that those were discarded from the packs a decade ago but it still tasted OK straight from the tube

I shop at Safeway and they only carry it in the big tins, I meant that I thought the army ration packs no longer used it ( I know it was army 'cos of the khaki tube - which is a change from the jungle green tube of my time ) and the ration pack plastic spoon is now khaki and it used to be white.
