This Luddite still prefers to shop in person, so he can taste the nuts to see if they are fresh and smell the strawberries.
For car-camping it's cheaper in the big tins but nothing beats real coffee if car camping

Agree, Milicano is not real coffee but better than most instants - it has I think 10% finely ground real coffee. Only one readily available as a sachet without sweetening and/or milk. BTW a lot of the pods work very well if you drop them into one of those travel-mugs that plug into the car cigarette lighter , so at least you start out with a hit! the mugs don't quite boil so the coffee doesn't get bitter.

Jarrah hot chocolate is a different food group isn't it? Great PMU - hot, sweet, quick hit - its just not hot cocoa or coffee as we know it, Jim.

And the "Moccona" sachets are a total bust too; tastes simply awful and the packaging is 90% air and 10% product and I needed 3 of them for a decent sized cuppa. Cecile said she needed 2 sachets and she likes weaker coffee so I had to try.
It's not really rocket science is it?

For many years I refused to drink instant coffee and would drag a stove top expresso maker out into the bush or brew strong 'cowboy coffee' with a tea strainer to catch the grounds. After a few overseas trips to China, Japan and the USA where finding a good expresso coffee is very challenging and mostly impossible I discovered I can live without coffee (and now go cold turkey in these countries rather than drink bad coffee)

However my return to instant coffee for camping started with the Moccona Cappuccino sachets (long skinny packets) and now I've switched to the Moccona Iced coffee sachets, I can't drink super hot drinks anyway and the Iced Coffee saves having to heat water in the morning on a walk. I consider these coffee flavoured drinks rather than true coffee but they work for me as a way to start the day.

A real coffee snob would say espresso (not expresso).... Just saying.... :D

I vote for the Millicano wholebean instant. I just bought a 100g jar on sale for $2 at Coles.

I have never been a fan of instant, but this is surprisingly good. I have previously carried coffee bags, but the thought of carrying around used, damp coffee bags had me doing some calculations:

1-2 coffees a day for a 5 day walk, say 8 coffees:
Coffee bags - end of trip = 104 g

I have a dinky little Vietnamese coffee maker (there is a picture of it in another thread, weighs 50 g), so if I used real coffee, 50 g + 64 g of coffee a start of trip, 50 g at end.

However, with the Millicano, at say 2 g/teaspoon, it is 16 g at start, nothing at the end...

Nestle hot chocolate sachets are 10times better than the jarrah ones.

Robert Timms coffee bags are my choice for walks over 7days long, anything shorter I take my jetboil coffee plunger and real coffee.

Once you go real there's no going back.....

My husband and I had also been struggling with a good coffee option for walks. After reading this thread, we have been drinking the Millicano instant with the 15% ground coffee on walks. We having been using it for the last two months, and have been surpised and impressed by how drinkable it is. A bonus is as the weather has warmed is that Iwe have found it to be good hot or cold (it dissolves easily in cold water for an an "iced" coffee hit). Previously we've tried various portable espresso, plunger and filter coffee contraptions when walking, but as we can't get a good extraction in the bush, we find this instant coffee to be very acceptable and since trying it haven't bothered trying anything else. It has a very short shelf life, so is often on sale at Coles. We drink our coffee black, so can't comment on what this coffee is like with milk, but I assume you could pre mix the appropriate ratio of milk powder and sweetner for an instant mixture for additing to hot water.

I've tried the lot - my last attempt of reasonable coffee on a 7 day walk was an aeropress which worked well but heavier, messier and bulkier than I liked.
I'm in Taiwan at the moment and have discovered drip coffee bags, which are like a mini dripolator and.unlike Australian coffee bags are all grounds, not instant. They aren't bad.unfortunately, I've never seen them anywhere but here.

I haven't tried everything on the market, but I usually use the Robert Timms coffee bags. Unlike other options, I think they're at least half actual ground coffee. I also drink coffee strong and generally use 2-3 depending on mug size.

Have tried Nescafe, Aldi and the Robert Timms coffee sachets. For me, Timms sachets were the least refered. Add-on chocolate is a bonus for the Nescafe and the Aldi.

Nestle Complete Mix Hot Chocolate 25g Sachet / Carton 100

Found this hot chocolate on the Overland Train and after searched everywhere for it until I found it at Office Works!

I always chuck in a couple for a hike as the sachets are a heavy foil and very tough. Contains the sugar, milk, cream, cocoa and I drop in a nip of Irish whiskey (medicinal  ).

It's just so SO delicious and simple to make, just add hot water... done!

Went to Alaska last year. Tried Folgers. Wow, that stuff is evil.

yeah, I was shocked when instant coffee here was drinkable. instant coffee in north america is for people that don't drink coffee to keep in hand for their (soon to be former) friends that do.

I love my strong coffee and lately been introduced by some more learned and hardened walkers , to straight coffee grinds( insert favourite brand from home ) in boiling water and stir and let settle for a bit then stir again. All the grinds settle to the bottom and I now love it ......and I'm quite a picky coffee drinker. Worth trying.

I love my coffee. At home I grind beans by hand and use a completely manual machine, but in the back-country I am more than satisfied with Robert Timms coffee bags.

It's a very full mix much like a hearty choco you would make for yourself on a cold night. Also it's a dry powder so there is no weight to pack...

Enjoy... 8)

I like mine strong, sweet and milky. Never found a premix that works so have made do with soup. But it's worth having a shot.

Me too, so this is for you. :)
Send a email to Nestle stating your wants and they will most probably send you some sample packs to try. I do it all the time with new products and companies are all too eager to abide...
