Rehydrating Powdered Milk

Postby DanShell » Sun 08 Feb, 2015 3:15 pm

Whats the secret to making decent milk?

I rehydrate powdered milk and its always lumpy, well not lumpy but its not milk like consistency, its like its not rehydrating properly.

Any tips? Thanks in advance. I did a search and returned zero results to specifically help.

Perhaps there is a better alternative to powdered milk for multi day walks?

1. Add the powder to the water, not the other way around.

2. Make sure it's not too old. If it goes into suspension (floating white bits instead of homogenous milk-looking), it's stale, and won't dissolve properly.

Hope that helps.

I keep my powdered milk in the freezer between walks. I also carry a small Nalgene bottle(250ml) to mix my milk in.

Powdered milk has a limited shelf life but don't throw the old stuff out, it is great double diluted and spayed on soft leaved vines [ pumpkin and zucchini] to stop downy mildew

Good tip thanks MD, my pumpkins have not been growing well at all this year, maybe I'll try some milk on them. Cheers.

Thanks everyone Ill grab a fresh batch.

Is it better to rehydrate it the night before or just do it as I need it?

I just put the milk powder straight into what I'm having Dan. So I have my oats or whatever in a snaplock bag with the powder already added before I leave home then just add water to the lot.

Thanks.
Every time I've tried powdered milk I've been using the old one from our pantry so it has turned me off it, I am looking forward to getting a new batch!

I have been taking those little long life milks, they are obviously heavy but much better than out of date powdered milk that would rehydrate.

I get the 300g Diploma skim milk powder. This one seems to suit me best and the smaller box means I usually use it within the useby date.

I pre prepare my muesli breakfasts and add the powdered milk to the muesli in meal sized portions. Adding water to the bag on the trail and mixing it has never been a problem, so although it doesn't work that well when trying to make straight milk without lumps, it works for muesli! :)

The lactose in milk is not as soluble as cane sugar or glucose so even with additives it takes a while to develop its full taste. While I don't mind it on my cereal in powdered form I like to premix and sit overnite for my coffee and as I usually have rolled oat porridge with butter as my breakfast I only mix about 500ml in my little shaker. Said shaker needs to be washed out well tho or by the end of a week it's more like having yoghurt in my coffee

Hello, I love dehydrated powder milk for walks. I always take some time to mix the powder with the water so that it becomes a little bit more "creamy" and not crumbly. I also like it a lot with cereals in the morning when I am on a longer walk.

How does powdered milk go with the Continental past packs? I assume you'd still add everything as normal except substitute milk with powdered milk.

Yep.

I'll usually cook with water and then add the powder at the end - that way it tends to burn on less.

Take a cow with you.
If it's docile enough it can even carry your gear.

Boiled the pasta and water for a bit and then chucked in the powdered milk. Came out perfect!

My vote is for Diploma Full Cream Instant Powdered Milk, I only use it for morning cereal and as others have said and premix each days breakfast before the walk in a small ziplock bag, during the walk just add water to the bag give a squish around and eat right out of the bag. I sometimes add a bit of powdered coconut milk to the mix as well.

I get the 400gm tin and write the date opened on the lid, if it hasn't been used in 12 months I haven't been out walking enough! My current tin was opened on 27 October 2014 and I reckon it will be empty after I pack my food for the Overland Track later this month!
