Hi,
There are lots of threads containing information and ideas on this subject. But no easy way to compare things.
So I have made a start here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing ... it should be open for all to edit - please add things in roughly the same order? You may need a google account - sorry about that.
The idea is to have an easy comparison of basic items ... for example the Base;
Oat cakes and crackers are highest in energy density, Tortillas/mountain bread are less energy dense.
The dehydration ratio is 1 for stuff that has not been dehydrated. Other numbers reflect the weight change from dehydrated to re-hydrated, or the other way around as a rough indication.
The last 2 columns are the product as packed (not served), calculated from the entered data. I expect some variation between brands of, say, 10% and a variation in price from time to time. Not too worried about either, consider them to indicators with product 'variation'.
The pack density of kJ/cc is not done. It should reflect the size of the product. {edit} Thought about this. Backpack sizes are in litres so it make sense to have the pack density in kJ/litre. {/edit}
The product packaging in not reflected here, most products would be repacked anyway. Some would be purchased in sealed packs, these should be selected for minimum package weight - alfoil pouches rather than tins for instance.
There is no recommendation on the items, just the energy density/cost comparison. Anything else is left to the user.
I have other spreadsheets for breakfast, snacks, dinner .. but they need some work - mainly on the dehydration thing and many additions.
{edit} Beverages is there ... not complete ... needs tang etc. Link is https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
Would be nice to have some comments? {/edit}
