Butter in small packets

Postby ninjapuppet » Thu 09 Sep, 2010 1:34 am

does anyone know where i may purchase butter in those small little packets you see at restaurants, or the ones they give you on planes?
neither my local woolies nor coles stock them. i can always cut a bit from a large tub and individually wrap them, but just thought its much neater and quicker to buy if i know where they're sold.

I just dont want to look like a weirdo and steal 5 small lumps of butter at a restaurant prior to going on a hike.

maybe someone in the hospitality industry can point me in the right direction?

Dunno - I get mine from Coles and I noticed at least one local IGA supermarket has them too. They come in boxes of like 10 or so (can't recall exactly how many). Western Star ones are the common variety down here.

This might be too late for you ninja, but if you frequent a cafe that uses them maybe you could ask them for a handful. They would not even blink an eyelid more then likely. Or you could offer to pay for them. I guess a fair price for them would be 20c each.

thanks rogo.
I saw a bunch of them at a buffet and asked but the table waiter just told me to take them. I saw it as stealing and didnt take it but luckily i saw them at a coles.
woolies dont seem to sell them.
Its good and neat for baking but now ive discovered those mini dropper bottles and take oil instead when frying stuff. no need for butter anymore unless baking.

Coles also now has powdered eggs for sale in the baking section released since mid year http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2010/07/26/farm-pride-releases-powdered-whole-eggs.html

Butter in small packets

Postby Bluegum Mic » Wed 08 Dec, 2010 12:21 pm

Just saw this and thought I would add for any others interested. We usually head to the local maccas just before a long multiday walk and ask if we can buy some jams, peanut butter, vegemite, butter etc in the small tubs. They are always happy and usually only charge you $1 or so for a good handful of the varieties.

Otherwise yes if it's just butter in small packs we grab the western ones in the ten pack.

How long will that butter keep for ???

Thanks.

A little squeeze tube of olive oil I think is ok, but you really can't beat butter for taste.

Cheers.

I usually get the Western Star packs from Coles but have also seen them at IGA and I noticed them at our local NQR store last week. I don't know if NQR stores are located in other states other than Victoria?
I've found they last for months in my fridge and have carried them in my pack for 8 days or so and they've still been ok to use. I've also used them for at least 4 months past the use by date and found no problems with them.
Obviously I'm not walking enough if I've got things going that far out of date.

I normally use a food tube for such things -
The tubes (and a link) are discussed in this topic.

I would approach the local motel or restaurant that uses them and see if they can sell you some.
If you are uncomfortable taking some from the waiter for free, try asking the manager
