All the melons type fruits, supposedly, are good to dehydrate.

Have you tried dehydrating a watermelon? They must be about 95% water. You'll convert several kilograms of melon into a few grams of super-snack. It is a slow process to do, on a mid-heat, but the results will knock your sox off, for flavour. The sugar buildup and release gives an energy hit to die for.

I was skeptical when first I read about how much people liked shrinking a water melon into nothing. Now I don't leave home without a sachet or two. Not that I get to eat any of it ... my wife and her girl friends, know what I pack.

Never tried water melon but dehydrated strawberries make great snacks too.

Slice it wafer thin. I had an inexpensive Sunbeam which looked quite like the Aldi model which inspired this thread, it would take most of a day from memory. Haven't done it this year yet.

Rockmelon is good too, but sliced thinly the watermelon is actually faster to dry, probably because of its more open texture. Just leaving it to drain (slanting the slicing board into the sink) for a few minutes and/or putting a paper towel over it, not enough for the paper to start disintegrating, will help quite a bit.

you can dehy in a solar oven. Eremophila, I did get one, worth keeping your eyes out for it I think. Probably won't be super durable, but so far I've done bananas, kiwis, zucchini, watermellon and mushrooms. Warren, that was a great idea! it didn't last long.

How's dehydrating different b/n a conventional kitchen oven and a solar one? If so, time to talk Miele? ;)

It only differs in the amount of thread drift it causes ;)

didn't mean to jump tracks. I haven't seen normal ovens come with drying racks although I know people do use them for that purpose; the solar oven does have specific dehydrating racks. Something to think about if you are thinking about how many appliances you need in your life!

I've got the Aldi one (comes with 6 trays I think) and it works great. Just finished off a spaghetti Bol (cooked as much of the liquid as I could away while still in the pot then put it on baking paper in the machine). Fruits, veg, meat - I'm really happy with how it's going.....time will tell if it can stand up to the longevity test, but so far so good..Lumina brand.

Use a 'mandolin' to get a consistent thickness - so things all dry at the same time. Aldi do these too from time to time. Note kitchen mandolin not musical mandolin.

For the DIY alternative - solar powered https://www.motherearthnews.com/diy/too ... 0z14jjzmar
