GPS not detecting satellites?

Postby kanangra » Thu 04 Oct, 2012 2:16 pm

My Garmin Etrex has decided that it can't locate satellites any more? Any thoughts on what the issue is? I'm assuming that they're all still up there?

Last I checked they were still working (although sometimes my phone thinks I'm 50m west of the road I'm driving on, hilarity from the confused direction voice) Could be that its looking for the wrong ones (thinking its in the wrong place) have you left it without batteries for a while?
Aside from doing a restore on it, which probably wipes the waypoints, the only thing I can think of would be if there has been a settings change (my older GPS used to take forever to find the satellites if I gave it an incorrect starting location)
just for kicks and giggles, is it still on the correct time and date? that can throw things off as well.

Occaisionaly it takes mine a long time to 'find' them and once it couldn't find them. I turned it off removed batteries, reseated microsd card and rebooted. It worked fine after that.
Satellites were still operating yesterday. That's all I've got sorry.

I'm not familiar with that device in particular but does it have a screen that displays the raw data coming from the GPS? If the reception is marginal often it will pick up the time before actual position data. Or is there a screen that displays the SNR of each satellite that it is picking up? Often a series of bar graphs.

I'd say it is probably faulty.

On a walk on the w/e mine wouldn't find any satellites either- when I got home it did! Very useful!! Of course this happens when I finally decide I should use it a bit more... Don't know what the problem was very annoying though. Device is garmin legend.

Nothing wrong with the satellites Kanangra. I've been using the original etrex most days for the last 5 weeks, slow as it ever was. Didn't notice a difference.

Just to add that the last time was late last week, something may have happened since them....

Thanks guys. I moved the batteries and reset the card and now we're going fine again.
