First Aid kit list

Can anyone share a list of items for a first aid kit. For one or two night hiking in NSW. Will be for one adult and a 10 year old.

There's little you need when you are still within a heli ride to civilisation. The top items are,

- Multi tool - with small knife and scissors
- Betadine ointment in a small tube
- Assorted bandaids, especially those larger square ones
- Packet of gauze dressing
- A roll of bandage
- Small roll of Elastoplast tape
- Panadeine and Voltaren tabs
- Sun block lotion
- Insect repellent

wound care and closure:
Non-stick dressings (4cmx4cm) and 8cmx8cm (regular gauze sucks to remove from wounds)
Tape ( smooth cloth tape also works for blisters)
bandaids

Generally anything really bad is going to only need to last until you get to the hospital, so fancy wound cleaning and dressings are not needed.

Gloves are handy as well.
elastic bandage (sprains and bites)
basic meds, anti-histamine and painkillers. wouldn't bother with ipecac or charcoal, those can be pretty bad if medical help isn't handy.

I carry a lot more, but a lot of it is either doubled survival gear, or stuff that can be improvised. for a couple days and only a few people, you don't need much, especially when most of your major injuries are not going to be managed in the field, they are going to be evac or abort situations.

Whilst this probably sounds like a smart *&%$#! response, have a think about what first aid items you have ever REALLY needed over the years. Often they are things that you wouldn't ever consider carrying - I broke my wrist in NZ in the middle of nowhere in January. It's amazing how you can cobble together a splint from "found" items.

Makes perfect sense and adequate with improvisation. The only issue here is that there'll be a 10 yrs old in tow which typically requires a bit more pampering backup or the wrath from the SO could be unbearable.

I have a pretty minimal 1st aid kit (Swiss card, betadine, cut your own bandaid strip and a few analgesics) but do have a compression bandage for twisted knees ankles etc and of course snake bite, It is one of the few items I have ever used (on someone else's twisted knee).

Another item I have used occasionally as I usually hike solo is a mirror as it quite difficult and uncomfortable to pop out an eye for some examinations. I achieve this with a small compass with the mirrored sighting lid. Edit - thinking about this I suppose I could just photograph the offending part of the anatomy - promise not to share on facebook!
