I think that thread was just starting when I joined the forum. It was a great introduction to some of the personalities.
I do rather miss Dave though. I thought he was going to give it another shot?

You must have thought, god... who are these cheeky *&^%$#@!....

Yeh he did say he'd be back, I suspect even if he does he will keep it quiet. Probably be hard to find anyone else crazy enough to join him on that trip again though??

Fancy me overlooking this...
Just found it on Facebook.
Although this enhanced connectivity doesn’t allow phone calls, it does enable you to send short email and SMS messages and update Twitter and Facebook and it won’t cost you an extra penny in phone bills. Should you run into trouble, the SOS function will alert the relevant emergency service to come to your rescue.

Also Here...
Type & Send: Use SPOT Connect to send custom email and text messages via satellites to your contacts. Create up to 41 character SOS, Help and Check-in/OK messages. Messages will be sent directly to the contact groups you select via email or SMS. You can even post custom messages on Twitter and Facebook. If you encounter problems, you can send custom SOS messages describing your situation, with your GPS position included.

FWIW, I've been testing Msger 2 on the Bogong High Plains this winter and it has worked fine except for one time (in cloud) when the fix was about 400m out.

Better than the old analogue system to be sure, but still worth taking a whistle.

If you're still capable of blowing ;-}

They were released late last year, but there has been issues with the battery resulting in a recall and withdrawal from sale while they sort it out. I heard that things should be sorted soon, so I guess we might see them for sale in the next month or so.

I'm trialling (ready for my Aus trip in a couple of months) the Spot Connect. The instructions are far from intuitive (and some are downright dumb), but after an exchange I got the unit working. Last weekend I used it form a remote area in The Mojave Desert and it worked as advertised (though some track points seemed to be skipped). The checking worked well and the device was OK. It is VERY fussy about the type of battery (and it reports freshly charged, high capacity rechargeables as exhausted) and if you use the track function it ate batteries in less than a day on the road....

If it uses AAAs like the Messenger, rechargeables will not work cos they're only 1.2v.

Have to run Lithiums in the Messenger.

Yikes.

Agree with rsser, messenger uses lithiums, and the Spot Connect FAQ battery page says "To obtain reliable performance use only AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium 8x batteries (L91). "

Good to see that they've gone back to AA batteries.

They're saying 6 days tracking with the lithiums, which is a day or two down compared to my experience with the Spot2, but not too bad I guess.
