Is there a GPS with a large font display?

Postby ausrandoman » Tue 14 Sep, 2010 9:11 pm

I'm a stick in mud: I like to use a paper map and a compass. About the only function I use on my old Garmin eTrex is the screen that displays (in about 4 point type  ) the grid reference of my currrent location. I use it occasionally to check that I am where I think I am. But I am no longer in the first flush of youth and the display is getting veeery hard to read.

I'd really like to get a GPS that uses the whole screen to say, in numbers 10 mm high, 5312 59216 and I'd know that Johnston Hut is amongst those trees down there.

Anyone know of an easy-to-read GPS for a bloke with specs, hearing aids and grey hair?

My Garmin 60CSX has a BIG NUMBERS function on some screens but the grid reference is not enlarged all that much. Its certainly bigger but not up to the required 10mm

I suspect that the big numbers might be what you're looking for.

Out of interest, my SatMap does have a reasonable display of the position on the Satellite page:

But its a lot smaller on the map page:

SatMap is currently a private import item, but there is talk of them becoming available here once they get the mapping sorted.

Thanks.

I'll try to find a shop where I can see one in the flesh - it's not the sort of detail that on-line retailers bother to quote.

Lots of the manufacturers have their manuals available online. You might like to download some models that interest you and check what they have to say re "big numbers" options.

Here is the site for Garmin
