I recently bought the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx.
I can highly recommend the 'OzTopo' maps from http://www.oztopo.com/
The map sets have 10m contours for the whole of Australia and the data is compiled from satellite imagery.
The quality of the mapping data is great and easily justifies the $230.00 price tag

For some free maps you can try the below sites. Note you have to register with GPS Australia (free) to view them. I don't know how they compare to Oztoppo but they are free so worth a try! Shonky Maps has contours but at much bigger intervals to Contours Australia.

Shonky Maps:

Contours Australia:

EDIT: I use Shonky Maps and Contours Australia together. Contours is just an overlay of contours while you use the Shonkyy Maps (no contours version) as the map that shows all te roads, points of interest etc. In the GPS you can turn off the contours (which speeds up screen refresh speeds) if you really dont care about them.

Just sold my mapping garmin gps. The best maps are Shonky! after that T4A but T4a is pretty much dead these days...due to very poor management. Oztopo is free (not as detailed but good enough) and then the openstreetmap phenomenon is really taking off. I couldnt be bothered googling up URL's for links...but im sure you can do that yourself.

But SHONKYMAPS are what you are after I rekon...I have contributed quite a bit of data to mr shonky back when they were being developed so Tassie POI are pretty well covered! I used to host the maps untill they got that popular they took my server down ;)
