An alternative to the Sony RX100

Sat 13 Sep, 2014 12:10 pm

4/3 sensor, 24-75, 1.7 - 2.8 lens, evf, 4K video, about the same size as the LX7 that it apparently replaces.

I wonder why the decided to call it the LX100 instead of the LX9...

Hmm. Canon and Nikon still behind the game. They might be in the RX100 ballpark, but it's looking like Panasonic has trumped them.

DPReviews has a first impressions review published.

For those of us who desire a compact camera that delivers non-compact camera photo quality, the only choices have been the Sony RX100 trio or the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark I and II. I've been very impressed with the RX100 III's image quality and excellent video features but, like some of my colleagues, I don't find it very pleasant to use. While I like the photo quality and controls on the PowerShot G1 X Mark II, it's just to big for everyday use.

The LX100 fits in-between these models, with more of a lean toward the G1 X II. It's not pocketable like the Sony but it's not quite as bulky as the Canon. In fact, it's not that much larger than the LX7, the camera that it replaces. The LX7 won't win any awards for build quality, but the opposite is true of the LX100: it's nicely built, as you'd expect from a $900 camera. The physical dials for aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation allow for much quicker changes than the single rear dial on the LX7. I'm less enthused about the electronic viewfinder, which uses a 'field sequential system' that causes a sort of rainbow effect and drives my eyes crazy. Some coworkers thought that it wasn't as bad as on the GX7, which Panasonic said may be due to an increased refresh rate...

Based on design and specs alone, it looks like Panasonic has hit one out of the park. The LX100 is priced a bit higher than its closest competitors from Canon and Sony, but the larger sensor may be worth the money. I think those who have been waiting patiently (or maybe impatiently) will be thrilled to see just how far the LX-series has come.

There are lots of unknowns at this point, not least JPEG quality and speed of focus, but Canon has a pretty good track record in most of these respects, so it's really just the battery life that is of lingering concern. At $699, the G7 X is not cheap, but it's comparable with the launch price of the original RX100, which suggests it's not unreasonable.

Steve Huff is not very positive on the Canon G7X ...

...I am going to talk about the G7X which is yet ANOTHER camera from Canon that is 3 years behind the times. It seems that Canon just can not be innovative in the small pocket cam or mirrorless area. They want to keep their DSLR sales strong so they are afraid to release anything revolutionary (like Sony is doing many times per year). Instead they copy others and release little flops like the EOS M. This time it is an RX100 copy in the form of a G7X.

oh come on, you can pick up a medium format camera for a snip at $16,000, and for a few thousand more you can buy the lens for it...

Look here you guys. The reason why Ansel Adams managed to take all his award winning photographs was because he was dedicated and carried his 30lb worth of full plate view camera and gears. You guys are just wimping out on weight and bulk. Forget it! No chance in hell in getting that world conquering outdoor photo! ;)

Really liked my LX3, but the LX7 wasn't a major step forward, and the LX series got left behind when the RX100 arrived. I'll be interested to see if DPReview do a side-by-side comparison - perhaps it's time for another LX.
