what gear do you all use?

Postby the_camera_poser » Fri 09 May, 2008 11:56 pm

What camera gear do you all use in the great Wild? I'm most curious. I've been thinking lately about what I'll need different in the camera line for extended trips in Tassie when we move there in 2 months. My wife and I are both mad-keen photographers, and our current set up that we take hiking with us is:

Canon 30D
Canon 350D
Canon EF-S 18-55 3.5-5.6 (a GOOD copy of the kit lens)
Canon 24-105/4 IS L
Canon 50/1.8 II
Canon 100-400/4.5-5.6 L IS
El-cheapo Velbon Tripod that sometimes comes

Either all in a Lowepro Miniktrekker AW II (I hate this bag, incidentally)
or divided up into a Tamrac Adventure 2 and a Tamrac Adventure 8.

When we move, I'll be upgrading stuff, and out typical going out rig will look like some or all of this:

Tamrac Expedition 8 or Lowepro Phototrekker AW II (haven't made up my mind)
2x Canon 30D (I do love my 30D)
Canon 17-40/4 L
Canon 24-105/4 L
Canon 50/1.8II
and either (or rarely both of...)
Sigma 150/2.8 EX Macro and 430EX Speedlight Flash
and/or
Canon 100-400/4.5-5.6 IS L

Also upgrading the tripod to a Manfrotto/Bogen PROBX055 with a 488RC2 Ball Head.

What are you guys taking out there?

You'll find descriptions of several other people's photography gear in the camera shootout topic, so you might want to check there for starters. :)

Buddy- do you scan your stuff to digital? Do you have a website.

I'd love to get into medium format, I'm just too broke....

I've got a Fuji FinePix S5700 which does the job, just. It doesn't have overly good manual settings and the colour saturation is always very dull looking.

In the near future I'm planning on upgrading to DSLR with the purchase of either a Cannon 40D or 1000D. :P

In the past, I've used a fairly low-grade Kodak pocket digital, then a Sony Cybershot.

I've (or should I say, my work has) recently upgraded to a Sony a350, which I've fallen in love with. I've yet to take it on a multi-day walk, being a bit daunted by the weight (682g) - 989g!.

The video camera I used for the Scott-Kilvert shoot was a little JVC Everio. I'd love to take my Good Camera, a Panasonic DVX102:

But I have a feeling I'd get a bit sick of lugging it up the Central Plateau ... :(

(As I always say, that's the best part of my job: I get all these cool toys to play with, and someone else pays for them!)

Can you elaborate at this stage what the movie is about that needed video of the Scott-Kilvert Hut? Tourism or education or ????

Just the bare basics for me...

NIkon D40
190XProB tripod (488RC2 head)
Bag

That's it...mind you if the financial situation was a little different I reckon that list would be a whole lot longer!!
