More than 2000 walkers have booked their walk on the Overland Track since bookings opened on July 1 for the next season.

“Last year about 9,000 people walked the track, an increase of nine per cent over 2015,” MP for Braddon Joan Rylah said.

The first days to be fully booked are in the week after Christmas with January and March also filling up quickly.

Northwest Region manager Nic Deka said while the track is monitored through winter, walkers should take extra care at this time of year.

“We strongly recommend that walkers attempting the track during winter are experienced and have a high level of navigation skills for winter walking,” Mr Deka said.
