Footwear for Overland track

Postby melinda » Mon 04 Jan, 2010 9:26 pm

Hi guys,
I'm starting the Overland track in a few days and would like some advice on footwear.
I normally walk in the Blue Mtns of NSW and we usually wear runners and gaitors all through the year.
Runners dry quickly and are light.
Would this runners/gaitors combination be suitable for the Overland.
If not, why???

Hi Melinda,

You will get plenty of advice here, I have just one piece to offer. It's more about practicality than anything else. If you are starting in 3 days, it's too late to be changing footwear anyway, so go with what you have. Assuming of course that what you have is in good condition, worn in but not worn out.

Have a great trip!

Runners!!!!! you can't be serious . They may be ok after a day's walk , but you'll need properly fitting walking boots .You will be walking over very hard ground at times. Also runners would be no good if it snows , unlikely but always possible.

Its dried out a lot recently and the forecast is good short term. Lots of people get away with runners. If that's all you have then fair enough, but I wouldnt. Possibly with a light pack, young knees and good ankles but if not then I would stick to boots with ankle support (especially if we get more rain. Some of the bog holes hide cord and wire traps and can demand a lot of unexpected angles from ankles and pressures on knees). Gaiters are probably a good idea even in the dry- to provide some basic protection from tiger snakes (tis mating season)

Hi Michael,
I have good boots which are comfy and would wear them if I had good reason to.
But my first preference would be runners.
Thats why I'm asking.
I get the impression that the mud can be so bad down there that the boots would just end up full of mud and take forever to dry.

Hi Melinda,

Ahh. I see your quandary now. :)

I've always been a boots man in Tasmania, but I tell you what. Last trip was in November in the NW. I was in a group and all but one had nice boots. The sandshoe wearer had an achilles tendon issue and simply couldn't wear boots. We copped a lot of water and it was basically impossible to avoid getting your feet in water over the top of the boots. All of the boot wearers came through with varying degrees of sodden boots, and as you know, they can take days to dry out - the sandshoe wearer just changed his socks and kept going, happy as larry. Was carrying about 1kg less on his feet too.

I agree about the ankle protection and all that, but I have to admit that I'm investigating decent trail shoes after that trip. The lightweight crowd are right into it and there are specialist manufacturers that only make lightweight trail shoes and don't have a presence in Australia. Check the range at Inov-8.com. Amazing.

Is it an option to take both?

I prefer boots for most walking in Tasmania - my feet generally don't get wet in them (water has to get over the top of my gaiters to get into the boots), and I have had ankle problems when wearing runners. I occasionally go bare foot, but it seems that wasn't on your list of options. :-)

A lot of people on these forums seem to have a lot of success with runners, and the Overland Track is easier than many other Tasmanian tracks, so they may be OK for you.

Hi guys,
I am taking note here of all your advice and will let you know what I footwear I decided on and how it went.
I'm pretty sure that 'barefoot' is not an option. I doubt that even pampering my feet with a week long Tassie mud treatment would help my abused feet!

I suppose it is what you are use to and how prone you are to twisting ankles, etc. I experimented with solid shoes (Sportiva), lower cut Scarp Trek boot (still very solid) and high cut Scarpa SL (not much stronger out there) and frankly the first two were much harder on my feet over boney ground compared to the high cut SL so that is the way I go but then I am no light weight in build or pack hauling. Unless you have a real issue stopping wearing boots, or commited to saving every gram, Tassie is best suited to boots in my humble opinion. Footwear weight does not effect me greatly so I go with what I know and trust will handle any condition.

Cheers Brett

We did have a topic with a long debate on this issue on the forums. I can't find it now, and think I might have foolishly and erroneously deleted it because it also contained an excessive amount of personal attacks and other such rule breaches...

...OK, finally recovered what information I could and deleted/edited a lot of stuff that was rule-breaking or close to it (about 4 hours work), and the recovered topic is now here: Bushwalking with running shoes

A lot of material in that topic is very relevant to this topic (and others), and it should never really have been deleted in the first place. My fault there.

Hi all,
I ended up wearing a pair of Salomon trail runners similar to those pictured below:
Salomon shoes.jpg

I'm used to walking in these shoes and had no problems with them.
I did do some of the muddy sidetracks and just added gaiters.
We did have pretty perfect weather so I guess we were quite lucky. :D :D :D

Hi Drifting,
No leeches and very little mud on the main track.
As I said earlier, we had very good weather.
We did have a few 'possum' encounters, but that was our own fault and brought about by the fact that we left food in the tent instead of in the huts.
Tassie possums are a lot tougher than ours in the Blue Mtns.

Hi all,

After a a recent trip to junction lake in runners, i would have to go against the grain and say how much i enjoy wearing them in these conditions in tassie. It was fairly wet in places and they performed well. Of course, as usual, this is all personal preference.

Cheers

Hi Melinda,

I have a pair of very similar shoes - Salomon Women's XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - great shoes although to date I've only used them on day walks.
You're obviously into travelling light. I was wondering what was your overall pack weight for the Overland?

Cheers,

Hi Jellybean,
Overall weight for OT (8 days) including 2 litres of water was about 15k.
I took quite a bit of fresh food so that knocked the weight up.
Also took a light weight umbrella which worked pretty well. (We did have exceptionally good weather with only
a half day of light rain. Couldn't vouch for the light weight umbrella in very windy weather.)
I was also carrying the inner part of a light 2 person tent.
OT is a good place to get ultralight act together. Makes it all so much easier!!!

Hi Melinda,

Thanks for that. I'm keen to explore ultralight or at least lightweight walking and, in the hopefully near future, to see how light I can get my pack for the OT whilst still ensuring I have all the necessary gear, food etc. I noticed on the SBW site that you (I think???) have been exploring UL/LWT walking (or maybe it was another Melinda?) so I thought I'd ask you the question! (I and a few friends are coming along to the SBW info night tonight).

15kg sounds great with 8 days worth of food and 2L of water!

Cheers,

Hi Jelly Bean,
I have also recently tried to go a bit more light weight- I have tried some Dunlop KT26's which some UL walkers appear to be fans of- overall I am comfortable with a shoe but don't think KT's are not the best for me- sore toes and feet. I used to do outdoor courses up in QLD and salomen hiking shoes were excellent. Still not sure about these in Tassie or NZ... will be interested to see how you fair in a bit of weather.
On a recent trip to NZ I took a montbell sleeping bag less than 600g and rated to about zero which I think should be ok for most of my trips in Aus & NZ- need to look at a lightwweight jacket to boost it when needed. Also bought the neoair which I love- the whole setup is so much lighter and smaller than my usual its great.
Hard to beat the NZ'ers though- they carry a cup rather than a couple of litres of water :D (but then again water water everywhere....).
In my reoutfitting I also got an Aarn pack and the redistribution of alot of the weight to front packs has been great for me...makes everything feel much lighter :o . Althouggh I would be interested to hear how people have faired off track with these packs as they have quite a few straps etc.
Have a great walk and will be interested to hear what worked for you.
Cheers Lizzy

Hi Jellybean and Lizzy.
Yep, Jellybean, I'm the light weight "Melinda" mentioned on the site.
Once you get 'light weight' sorted you will never go back to 'heavy weight'!
I'm really glad to hear you and your mates are going to the new members night. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
Let me know how it went!
Lizzy, I use a baby "Aarn" (Marathon Magic 10 without the front pockets) as my day back, and it stands up to every thing well including lots of off track walking and bushbashing. Had it for about 2 years now and wouldn't change it. :D :D :D
All those straps make it very comfy and easy to adjust.

Hi Lizzy,

If I do the OT in April/May I think I'll stick to my boots (if I did it in Jan - March, especially with the weather they seemed to have this year, I'd definitely consider using the trail runners, especially if I could get my pack weight down to around the 15kg mark). [I'd also consider them in NZ in summer, at least for the walks I've done so far - Routeburn and Queen Charlotte]. I'm having the same thoughts re rain gear - while I appreciate that you can get any weather at any time of the year on the OT, in general there seems to be less rain over the summer months compared to the Autumn/winter months. My thoughts at the moment are that I'd definitely take my lighter weight rain gear in Jan to March (Montane Quattro DT jacket and Atomic DT pants ~450g total, but am not sure whether I would do so in April/May or whether I should take my heavier gore-tex gear - something to ponder (I'm leaning towards the gore-tex) but I'm keen to hear any thoughts re that).

Re sleeping bags - yes that's definitely somewhere to lose some weight, especially if you have a decent lightweight jacket to add to your sleep system. Depending on the conditions I currently use a Mont Hotwire Extender bag (4 to 13C) (~650g) (I originally bought it to use with a Macpac Exped wt bag in Nepal - handled down to - 20 with ease) or a Marmot Helium bag (comfortable down to about -5) (a very good bag and while alot lighter than the Macpac bag - which is excellent - still weighs around 1kg. I may look at a lighter weight Montbell or WM bag further down the track  ).

In terms of jackets, last year I bought a Patagonia nano puff pullover (230g) to use as an mid layer alternative to a fleece and a North Face thunder 800 fill down jacket (330g). Both are warm, lightweight and water resistant. Really happy with both.

Yes, it would be very nice to be able to carry just a cup instead of a couple of litres of water!

I bought a GoLite Pinnacle when looking for a lighter pack but a friend has an Aarn and loves it. The redistribution of weight makes a lot of sense.
Will definitely provide a report once I’ve completed the walk and let you know what I decided on. (The trick will be finding a window where I can get away for a week!).

Cheers,

JB

The new members night was great! I was surprised how many people were there – around twenty (I guess it was the first one since last year? Lots of New Year resolutions…or is it always like that?). Judging by the questions asked it seemed like there were quite a few potential new members who hadn’t done much, if any, walking and a few who have. I am completely stunned by the number and range of walks (generally at least a couple of options every weekend and often more) and the range of activities that are offered. We all - four of us - signed up. (I must say too, that the clubrooms are in an exceptionally nice area – Kirribilli – to me (as a sandgroper) Kirribilli is classic Sydney. We enjoyed a refreshing beverage around the corner after the meeting! We’re really looking forward to getting involved. :D

Hi Jellybean,
Good luck on the ^^^ bike trip!!!
Was on a walk on Saturday and one of the guys turned up with what looked like a 4 litre can of paint from a well know paint manufacturing company.
It was some sort of promotional product, but it was full of JELLYBEANS.
It made me think of you. Gee I laughed. Do they call you Jellybean because you eat a lot on walks????

Thanks, looking forward to it! I was off the bike for a while because of a series of bad injuries and am loving being back on it! Hopefully we'll get reasonable conditions (going down icy descents in rain with a big bunch is not my idea of fun! We've already decided if the conditions are potentially dangerous we'll go walking and wine tasting instead! There are plenty of nice walks and some very nice reds to be had in that area! ) (While I don't mind walking in those conditions, being on a bike on steep, icy or wet descents with inexperienced riders - on those sorts of rides there's always plenty - can be dangerous).

No, I don't eat alot on walks (and my sugar fix of choice would probably be snakes; but I'll have to remember to bring some jellybeans to SBW walks! ). Jellybean is a play on my name and someone used to call me jellybean (amongst other things   ).

Interesting topic so thanks very much for recovering it Son of a Beach. I walked with one of my sons in Tassie a few years ago and while I wore boots he wore 'sandshoes'. I was sometimes worried that he'd lose them in the mud but he never did. My worse bushwalking experience with sandshoes (generic term for practically any flexible soled footwear that is not a sandal or boot) was to step on the end of a shape narrow rock that was balanced on a fulcrum rock and it swivelled up and thwacked me on the ankle. YOWW!!!! That wasn't in Tassie but boots would have saved a lot of pain, or to put it in the modern vernacular, boots would have saved pain big-time.
