Had light snow on my tarp @ Fergies Paddock, Lake St Clair. Spent 2 weeks there. The main gutser of the outbreak hit around 1320 on Friday 11th December. It was like a jet flying over at low altitude. Wind was very loud.

The colder air moved through overnight into Saturday morning. At lunch time Saturday, snow was still sitting around 80 meters higher than Lake St Clair in the surrounding hills.

Cheers

Hail and then snow for two days in the SW. Marvellous, even if it did make for some nervous walking conditions on the way out.

10/12/2015 the ranger at Kia Ora advised a bushwalk alert had been declared and no-one was allowed to leave Ronny Creek. Got to Windy Ridge 11th and light snow started and got heavier over night.

BOM says snow above 1300m, how delightful, wish I was there!. So much nicer than the 40 degree day we are supposed to be having here in Perth!

Snow surprise for Tasmanians after a summer of weather extremes
Fires, flood and now snow: Tasmania has had a summer of weather extremes.

After weeks of warm and dry weather, there has been a sprinkling of snow in Tasmania's Great Lakes district and on Hobart's Mount Wellington.

The temperature dipped to zero at Liawenee in the Central Highlands overnight, with light rain turning to snow early this morning.

Kaylee Hattinger at the Great Lakes Hotel said it started snowing there about 6:00am, but it quickly melted away.

"It covered the cars, it was enough to go 'oh, snow!'," she said.

"But it's very fine, but more than hail, and fluttering down.

"I get really excited with snow, even in winter. But in summer it's even more special, I think."

Mrs Hattinger said snow had been forecast down to 1,100 metres so it wasn't a complete surprise.

"I had been keeping an ear out for it," she said.

"How we know is it gets really quiet, so at about 5:40 this morning it got really quiet and I stuck my nose out and it was snowing."

She said many guests at the hotel missed the wintery display with the snow melting as the sun came up.

"I did feel like going and knocking at the door saying 'oh look, snow!'," she said.

GIF: Summer snow at Great Lake
The Great Lakes District bore the brunt of snowfall during one of Tasmania's coldest winters in decades in 2015.

The snow has been spurred by a cold front moving across the state.

While it is not uncommon to see summer snow in parts of Tasmania the Bureau of Meteorology is not expecting any further flutters.

"We've seen the cold front move well away to the east now over the Tasman sea," forecaster Debbie Tabor told 936 ABC Hobart.

"We're left with this south-westerly air stream for the rest of today and tomorrow, easing right off late tomorrow and into Thursday.

"We'll see a cold day in the south today and cool in the north — a little bit different, flushing out that heat and humidity."

Snow has been falling for the past 4 hours and settled on the ground at the Great Lake Hotel. (Facebook)
No reports from Cradle, but one would Imagine that the mountains will be white in the morning.
Currently 0° at Liawenee.

The Dove Lake webcam is still US and has been since 6:44:53 PM 30/04/2016.

Looking at the anglers alliance Great Lake webcam & the Hotel Facebook page photos I would say 3 to 5 inches of snow settled. The road is currently 4x4 only.
Mercury website shows Mt Wellington covered in white.

Looking forward to someone from Cradle having an imput.

My photos from this morning looking across to Mt Wellington. Snow down to at least The Springs from photos I saw online. Didn't take long for it to start melting off quickly though.

Taken from my verandah.

Great pic! I was lucky enough to wag work and headed up the zig zag track and back down the ice house track today. Was lovely, however very windy up on the plateau!
Very light dusting at springs probably 6 inches up top.

Not sure why both reports say this is our first snowfall as it is our 3rd for the year.

Reporters must have been asleep for the other 2.
Currently just under the snow line at Meander it's fairly cold and wet

We just drove out from lake St Clair and the road through the highlands is getting a very good blanket, I feel like we were lucky to get out when we did !

We saw at least three trucks stranded between the lakes and poatina.
