Aldi Electronic Compass Barometer Altimeter - $20

Postby keithy » Fri 28 Aug, 2015 11:33 pm

Noticed this in Aldi's catalogue this week, but forgot to post earlier.

An electronic ABC (altimeter barometer compass) for $20. https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys ... carabiner/

Aldi Electronic ABC.jpg

  • Electronic weather forecasting with symbols
  • Barometer, thermometer, humidity, time, compass and altimeter all in one
  • Barometer display in hPa/inHg
  • Min./max. memory
  • Barometer graphics - memory of the last 12 hours
  • Electronic weather forecasting with symbols (sun, light clouds, clouds and rain)
  • Trend indicator
  • Thermometer and humidity
  • Temperature display
  • Humidity display
  • Min./max. memory of temperature
  • Min./max. memory of humidity
  • Trend indicator for temperature
  • Trend indicator for humidity
  • Temperature in °C and °F
  • Comfort indicator
  • Time
  • 12/24 hour display
  • Altimeter
  • Electronic compass
  • Battery indicator
Judging by the screenshots, it looks like it can only display the time or the pressure reading, but not both at the same time.

Looks ok for the price - you get cheap Chinese ones for around this price, but without Aldi's warranty. I have ABC features in my watch that I take walking, although this one has the humidity reading which my watches don't have.

I am. Could probably get something similar from Aliexpress but, as keithy says, this has a warranty. Plus it looks better than anything I can find there for the same price.
Thank you, walkon. xx

Anyone used it yet? Thoughts? Might drop in and have a look. Value? Usefulness? A bit reluctant on another battery operated gadget.

OK, its ambient temperature sensor range is 0-50 deg C. Not much good for those winter gigs. Otherwise it's pretty feature rich, even has declination adjustment for the electronic compass. The humidity meter doesn't look to correlate with our local reading but might have to give it some time to equilibrate. Otherwise not a particular robust design with questionable water resistance (if any). Need to store and use with some care. Couldn't find cheaper on Aliexpress so that makes this Aldi offer a pretty decent deal.

It is described as "protected against splash water" and has an o-ring in the battery compartment. Was surprised that the lower temperature reading was described as 0 deg but will put in freezer to see how low it really goes. Very comprehensive manual, 36 pages but includes several pages of warnings not to eat or incinerate battery or make life-dependent decisions based on its forecasts etc.. There is a hard plastic shell over the display which is held on with stickers. I'm not sure if this is intended to be optionally removed or not.

Aldi Electronic Compass Barometer Altimeter - $20

Postby GPSGuided » Wed 02 Sep, 2015 8:46 am

Yes, those 3-4 stickers looked odd. I too wondered if the clear plastic top would fall off by their removal. Lol!

At least it only uses a single 2032 button battery. I always have a collection of those for my bike computer. All good.

I called the people listed in the manual about whether the hard plastic cover is meant to be removed or not and am waiting for an answer.

Applied a hitech scientific test to mine regarding temp range.....stuck it in the freezer.....it shows temps below zero.
Temp readings are slow to respond, it seems it' might be measuring it's own temp not the air temp.
I don't know if I've set something wrong but that graphic thingy of clouds and sun is a bit annoying and doesn't seem to mean much.

Taking the stickers off doesn't release the cover, it is still stuck fast on mine.

Remove the phillips screw at the back would allow the unit to be unclipped from the carabiner harness. The more I look at it, the more it looked to be an adapted bike computer casing.

Being a dummy in all things with buttons ,going to ask a dumb question...do I have to allow for deviation 12 degrees North etc. with these Aldi type elec compass & are they dead accurate ? or should I rely on tested & true normal compass ?........

Do a side by side comparison with your trusted compass. I'd say there'll be unit to unit variations in their alignment accuracy. They are good enough for general direction guidance but I'd be reserved for precise navigation due to its diminutive dimension. Otherwise yes, it's pointing magnetic north unless you've manually preset the magnetic declination angle in the unit for your location.

The electronic compasses I've found can vary depending on the chip used. Some are quite sensitive to external interference (like some regular compasses can as well). I have one in my watch that does gets intereference when in office buildings and concrete structures - must be picking up the rebar reinforcing.

I've seen a few of these devices with declination adjustment, but as GPSGuided posted, if you don't make the adjustment and assuming there is no interference, it points magnetic north.

Also usually the cheaper magnetometers in these alti/baro devices are not tilt compensated, so can be in accurate if readings are taken when not held level.

The tilt compensated compasses like those in some GPS devices, like my eTrex 30 or Oregon 600 can display accurate readings even when not held level.

At my closest Aldi, they still had around 20 or so in the cabinet this weekend if anyone was interested.

This unit does not have a 3 axis compass module and hence no tilt compensation. Fortunately it stops giving a reading when it's not held near level. Accept that's the performance limit of a $20 device.

Tried the Aldi weather station compass function against two other compasses today while walking,it seemed somewhat eratic, won't be relying on it ,liked the other functions though & they seemed to be OK.......Can't expect the world for $20..

Well, I'm not interested in the compass - I always carry a normal one anyway, plus there's the GPS just in case. This is really about the weather station and altimeter. I've always wanted an reasonably accurate way of measuring temps etc when I'm out, especially overnight.

The temp and barometer seemed to be on target. I am not sure of the weather prediction feature yet, or at least how best to utilise it. A day or two after purchase we had a weather front and rain, the weather station was still suggesting sunshine with cloud. Need to read the manual some more.

I put it in the freezer and it works fine, even shows 0% humidity (a blank really).
It definitely shows negative temperature values. How low I don't know.

Thanks for the experiment. I guess the linearity of the sensor goes off below zero. So may not be accurate. Anyone has the facilities to do a calibration comparison at -10 deg C? That'd be a helpful reference point for bush use.

Hi all, I came across this apparatus when I was hiking last week. Someone I met on the trail had one. Does anyone know if they are still available somewhere? I would really like to have this or something similar, I think it would be a great addition to the gear.

Aldi seems to be the only store you can go into intending to purchase nappies but have a good chance of leaving with something like a welding kit!
