HI All
New to the forum and have been soaking up the wealth of information you have here.
Very interested in quilts, and looking forward to supporting a local guy and forum member.
I am looking for opinions on a zip closure foot box, it would appear to be the best of both worlds, or am I missing somthing.
Would apreciate your views.

cheers

The green tea is a nice colour and I think there's more contrast with the Olive Drab in reality than is shown in the photos. I also think it would make a nice combination with red, a bit of a christmas theme perhaps.

Hi Everton, hopefully some owners of the zip footbox quilts will post about their experiences. The zip footbox does give more options and versatility in warmer conditions with a small weight penalty of around 15g. Some people prefer the simplicity of the sewn in footbox. I've previously been a bit sceptical of the zip/drawcord footbox because of the hole that is left when cinching the drawcord. The insulated plug on my quilts should mitigate that issue and I certainly wouldn't mind the option of leaving a hole for venting or opening it up fully in warmer conditions.

I have the zip foot box and its a no brainer for me. IMHO it is the most important part of making the 'quilt' a genuine quilt and being able to use it in warmer weather. As Mike has suggested the sewn in flap/padding certainly blocks any hole that may be left behind when its done up.

I'm also a new member; joined specially because of your quilts! Can you send me a PM when you get time please. I'm interested in a quilt that can be opened out flat, so I presume that means with a zipped foot-box.

So I've got some updates on the quilts and some more things coming down the pipe. Firstly the HyperDRY down option is now going to be 850 fill power duck down, in fact the quilts that have gone out in the last month or so with the hyperDRY down have had the 850 in them. The pricing will remain the same as the previous 800 fill HyperDRY so it's a small but nice upgrade. I also have a small quantity of 950 fill power HyperDRY goose down, I'll do an update with specs and pricing soon but in the meantime if you're interested contact me and ask about it.

I'm also in the process of building some quilts that will be in stock and ready for quick shipment, so hopefully I'll be able to offer something to those looking to get a quilt on short notice. As always there will be the option of choosing your fabric colours and having your quilt made to order.

As for other things coming down the pipe I'll be ready to offer vapour barrier liners very soon, which will offer a good warmth boost for either my quilts or any quilt or bag that you happen to have. These will offer a better warmth boost to weight ratio than your typical thermal liner. See discussion here http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=22669

I've also been prototyping and testing a design for a synthetic insulated hood for quite some time now. I'm now happy with the design and I'm in the process of producing the first batch so I should be ready to offer them in the next few weeks. Should be good for cooler temperatures where you start to need more than just a beanie.

Finally I'll put up a few photos of some of the quilts that I've sent out recently:

eP1260363.JPG

Here we have a -8C quilt in blue and racing red, a -8C quilt in blue and forest green and a -2C quilt in olive drab and black.

eP1260391.JPG

Another -8C quilt in blue and racing red alongside a -8C quilt (with 50g overstuff) in burnt orange and navy.

Cheers Scotty, there is some real nice gear being made in Aus these days :D

I'm not making synthetic quilts at the moment, maybe I'll look into adapting my design for synthetic fill in future.

Just a few pictures of a couple of quilts that went out last week:

eP1260432.JPG

Here we have a -2C quilt with zip/drawcord footbox in victoria blue and green tea and a -12C quilt with sewn in footbox in deep purple and burnt orange. The -12C quilt has 100g more down than the -8C quilts I'm offering and increased baffle heights to account for the extra loft. Both quilts are filled with the 850 fill power HyperDRY duck down.

Great to hear of the upgrade in the down.

I'm saving up to order one of these. Your regular size fits alright but if you have a wide in the pipeline, a few extra cm's would give me a bit of extra coverage when I sleep on my side.

So the next step is to offer a shorter and longer quilt along with the regular length but there would be the possibility of doing xs quilts as well after that. The limiting factor is getting the templates made (and doing a little bit of a redesign), I was working on getting templates laser cut in sheet aluminium earlier in the year but hit a few roadblocks and unfortunately let it slide. More recently the company I was talking to about the laser cutting seems to have closed down, so another setback.

What size kids are we talking about?

I'd like to offer a wide version eventually, but it'll be after the s and l versions are available. The long quilt will be around 4cm wider than the regular to allow a bit more elbow room for longer arms. I'm glad you got to have a look at one to get a feel for the sizing.

Still in the "back of my mind" design stage... but I do have a few design ideas.

Thanks Mike,

4cm of extra width might me enough. Do you have a loose time frame for when these might be available, as in are we talking 1-2 months, 6 months or a year? just don't want to place an order if something more suitable is just around the corner :D

As I said I hit a few roadblocks on getting the other sizes out and it went on the backburner while I focussed on other things but I'm back working on it as a priority so hopefully in the 1-2 month range.

Re: Made to order ultralight down quilts

A few months ago Ripstop by the Roll announced that they had a fancy new fabric printing setup allowing then to print just about any pattern onto fabric. They so far are offering two fabrics for printing, a 1.6 oz/sq.yd. polyester ripstop primarily for hammocks and a 0.9 oz/sq.yd. 15 denier polyester taffeta fabric they're calling Membrane 15 that is downproof and designed for quilt and sleeping bag shells. So I had pretty much no choice but to order some of the prints they were initially offering and make up some of my quilts with this fabric.

The fabric is nice with a soft, smooth hand as well as a good balance between breathability and water resistance with what seems to be a good quality DWR treatment. What really stands out of course is the prints and what's even more exciting is that they are planning to offer custom printing soon where they will print on fabric an image that you provide. This will open up a huge field of creative possibility and I'll be more than happy to make some truly unique quilts with the custom prints if that is what anyone would like. The only downside at present is the cost, which is understandable given they have to run the fabric through a giant dye sub printer to print the patterns. Nonetheless it'll be great to see how this new capability can be used to make some unique and beautiful gear!

If you're interested in the printed fabrics and want to see what patterns are currently being offered then have a look at the OutdoorINK section of the Ripstop by the Roll website: https://ripstopbytheroll.com/collections/outdoorink

Below are some pics of the quilts I've made with the printed fabric, these will soon be made available in my in stock quilts thread (viewtopic.php?f=27&t=23987) at the regular price. Made to order quilts with the printed fabric and future custom printed fabric will have a surcharge due to the extra cost of getting the fabric.

Also waiting to hear when you will be making a double quilt (have been watching and waiting for many months but thought I'd add my voice to the chorus).

I've got a lot of work going on behind the scenes at the moment but I am starting to put some ideas together for a double quilt. There has definitely been enough interest expressed to put some work into double quilts!

Anyway, more quilts have been going out recently and here are a few pictures of some of them:

eP1260716.JPG

A nice stack of downy goodness :D . All -8C quilts with 850 fill power HyperDRY down and zip and drawcord footbox closures. The two blue quilts are actually in stock and available to ship out right away! The orange nad green quilts have gone out to their respective owners.

These ones are Macaw Green shell with Navy liner and Burnt Orange shell with Charcoal Grey liner respectively.
