Further tested my quilt on Friday night, it was down to zero here so a good opportunity.

Quilt specs: -8C regular size with drawcord footbox and white goose down. Deep Purple HyperD 1.0 for the shell and forest green Argon 67 for the liner.

I wore thermals and long socks, mat is an Exped SynMat with a silk sleeping bag liner used as a kind of "fitted sheet".

Didn't have the quilt wrapped around me very tightly but was warm and toasty all night. Very happy :D thanks Mike.

I gave my -8 a run on Saturday night up in the hunter valley. Was a bit cold underneath because I wasn on an el cheapo inflatable mattress with a slow leak in my van, so not much insulation there, but the quilt performed amazingly (with macpac 220 merino thermals). Got down to -3 overnight and it looked like the attached photo at 7am. Loving it. Thanks again Mike!

There have been enough requests that I do plan to work on a design but to be honest I think it'll be quite a way off before anything is ready to go.

We have just received our quilts and they look great, perfect for our motorcycle trips.

I decided to go with the Sweet Potato and my partner picked her colours which she has named the Passionfruit :D

Here are a couple of pics.

Cheers V2man! I'm guessing that's the weight of the sweet potato quilt as I'd expect the passionfruit would weigh slightly more in the sack with straps. For anyone wondering these are a Long/Wide -8C with 15d shell/10d liner (sweet potato) and Reg/Wide -8C (with 100g extra down and taller baffles so really about a -14C if I extrapolate the rating) with 15d shell/15d liner (passionfruit), both with the 850 fill HyperDRY down. I took a few quick snaps of these before sending them off so I'll try to post up photos of these and some of the other recent quilts soon.

Hi Mike,

Almost pulled the trigger last night on an EE revolution, but thanks to what is starting to look like your cult-like following I saw great things said about your quilts and would much rather buy Australian.

As I've just created an account could you please shoot me through a PM.

Thanks.

I've sent you a PM, thanks.

Here's some photos of some interesting recent quilts:

A regular length, wide quilt with alternating colours between the inner and outer. Both fabrics are the 15d micro-ripstop so the quilt has a consistent feel.

A regular quilt with a dragon scale print pattern on the shell fabric. The fabric is the printed Membrane 15 fabric from Ripstop by the Roll.

A couple more shots of V2man's new quilts: a long/wide and a regular/wide (a bit weird lighting or colour balance on these ones):

Another interesting recent project was a custom half quilt for a user who wants a super ultra-light and compact kit for fastpacking. The quilt has 10d fabric inside and out and is filled with 150g of 950 fill down with a total weight of 240g. The loft is designed to be the same as my +4C quilts and the length is 140cm, designed to come up to a little below the armpits to give good overlap with the insulated jacket that you also need to wear. The quilt retains the clips for the usual pair of pad straps and I think at least the top strap might be quite important with a half quilt to hold it in place. Could also be used as a junior quilt?

eP1280613.JPG

This picture shows the quilt clipped to the pad straps which should prevent the quilt from being thrown off inadvertently.
eP1280610.JPG

The quilt has a flat sewn in footbox with no sewn through seams.

Wow, looks like you've got some interesting stuff in the works Mike! Excited to see more. My +4C short quilt I got from you a while back is a beauty. Couldn't be happier. I'll be back to pick up a -8C in a few years for a PCT thru hike! Thinking I'll go all out, 950 fill anyone?

Cheers, glad you're happy with your quilt! Should be a great experience to do the PCT.

Well the trip out to Birdsville didn't turn out as cold as we had expected. Other trips out west at this time of year have seen -1 at night and some single digit days.

This trip saw a lot of the days in the low to mid 30's with the nights getting down to 8 - 15.

We did have one night on Deon's lookout where the wind picked up and we felt like we were sleeping in the tumble dryer and was probably the coolest night.

The quilts were great, easy to use and on the warmer nights easy to regulate the temp. When it did cool off a bit they kept us nice & warm.

Easy to pack up and took up little room.

Cheers V2man

P.S. My partner was wondering if you do a pillow? In passionfruit of course

Sounds like a good trip V2man, and those are some warm days for this time of year! I'm sure you will get to test the quilts closer to the limit on future trips. As for pillows, well they're a bit difficult because of the requirement to have some firmness under your head. For a down pillow you need a lot of down to get the right firmness. synthetic is less compressible so probably works better for a packable pillow but would still have some weight and bulk for its size. Some people are happy with inflatable pillows but it's a personal thing. Perhaps a good compromise would be a thin synthetic pillow with an extra pocket behind the batting to stuff in spare clothes to build it up to the right height. What size pillow do you think would work?

Cheers Hutchy, I've sent you a PM.

Hi Mike,

Would you be able to make an under quilt for a hammock? And similarly a top-quilt for a hammock?
If so would you be able to make a quote? I am interested in down for it's warmth and compactness. I want to be able to go camping in winter, and eventually in snow and storms, where I'll probably have a pea-pod system go over the under and over quilts.

Thanks,
BigBenny

Hi Mike,

After weeks of reading up on the advantages of quilts, I'm almost done humming and harring and almost convinced its time to burn the old sleeping bag and move on to one of these.
I new here. When you get a chance, would you please PM me?

Hello Mike, joined this forum entirely to ask you to PM me about one of your quilts! Would you drop me a line please? I'm getting into fastpacking and am thinking of a short +4 with drawcord footbox. Or maybe a slightly lighter version, say +8? I am new to the concept of quilts however and have ALL of the questions, so brace yourself!
