[NT post Aus] Starlyte-style ultralight stove

Hi all,

Since Zelph doesn't ship to Australia, I'm making Starlyte-style stoves for my own ultralight backpacking. Total weight is between 9g and 13g depending on the size, and the stove can hold 30mL of metho without spilling. With a caldera cone such as the ones produced by trail designs, 500mL of water will reach a rolling boil using 15mL of fuel. I typically use 12mL of metho and mix in 3mL of water, which is equally effective and saves fuel. After making my own stoves and testing quite a lot I've still got heaps of material left over, so I'm happy to make them for others.

I have 2 versions of the stove- a smaller wedding favour tin, and a larger aluminium soda can version.

I've made my own. It's easy (and I'm not much of a DIYer).

For the stove, buy (or acquire) a make-up tin, and some carbon felt.

Cut a few circles of the carbon felt with the diameter of the tin, and stuff them into the tin. It's a 5-minute job and it works perfectly. You don't need a wire mesh or anything to cover the carbon felt.

This style of stove works best inside a caldera cone, and also has the advantage of being non-spill, and having a sealable lid for storing and transporting unburnt fuel.

For the caldera cone, buy some aluminium roof flashing (or titanium sheet if you can find it and have $$$), and then follow the instructions in this video:

Hey Baka,
I wrote to the starter of this thread but got no reply last year. What distance to from the top of your kojin style stove to the base of your cookpot do you have. I have a 900ml titanium pot and some SS foil as well as a cone calculator and template already created. Any help appreciated. Will buy some Carbon felt and tins and play around with it. Cheers mate

I leave about 2.5 cm between the top of the stove and bottom of the pot. I based that on something I read somewhere some time, and it works fine, but I haven't done any experimentation to see what's ideal. Maybe a bigger or smaller gap would be better.

One more tip: the carbon felt shrinks a little over time, so you can cut it a little bigger than you think is right, and then squeeze it in. After using mine about 20 times the height of the felt had reduced enough that I could add another layer, which I did.

Thanks for that mate... That was my guess. Around 25-30 mm. Will build a cone and pot setup for that height. One more question. With the carbon felt do you fill the container to just under the lip? I should probably do a quick build thread as I think these stoves are an essential part of any ones kit. Will post a new thread when I get it all together. Thanks for the help!

I added the felt so that it matched the height of the lip. And then, as I said, it shrunk down after a bit of use, so I added another layer of felt to get it back up to the level of the lip.
