Mount Gell advice

Hi all,

Anyone been to Mt Gell, West of Lake St Clair? I have been informed that there is a track/route off the end of Rufus Canal Road which takes you to Lake Undine, from which you can then approach Gell. I've also noticed on listmap that there are forestry tracks on the West side of Gell.

Also, the Hobart Walking Club page there is mention of Gell as a day walk. http://www.hobartwalkingclub.org.au/htm ... walks.html

Can anyone shed light on this?

I've been to Mt Gell but came in from the Cheyne Range via Little Hugel. I have walked in to the Abel above Lake Undine and from here it was open and easy towards Australia Tarn. There is a track from the end of the Rufus Canal Road but it only goes to Lake Dixon. from here you need to walk up the Franklin River to just below Lake Undine and then climb up towards the Abel. As you climb up the rock shelves you will pick up some cairns fairly high up. Its reasonably open going but navigation skills are required. I would allow 3 days for both the Cheyne Range and Lake Undine routes.

I have heard that by following an old Hydro road at the foot of Arrowsmith and an old tramway it was possible as a day trip but don't have any details.
