Thanks, I wondered that.

Good to see though that the conflict is being thought about/discussed... even if it is in the conversation, which isn't really read by those on the side of politics who would benefit from the conflict.

Thanks Spud. I think the realisation is finally dawning that people of this ilk are rattling at park boomgates everywhere.
Some bold and flippant, others in sheep's clothing. I doubt any wasting energy in turmoils of conscience, personally I despise them for this.

There's a bit going on in the Australian, behind paywalls. I guess those supplying media outlets with their opinion are more interested in targeting high rollers, rather than garnishing support from a wider base.

Wow... there are so many half-truths, mis-truths, and devious phrasings in there, it's truly sickening. What a sad individual to have to resort to such tactics.

I wonder who his appeal is for as it's not for traditional users (who see straight through it), not many non-users (who most likely don't care). The enthusiasm for EOI's provides no stability for (most) existing business, and our park service were considering limiting rather than encouraging new entrants, so it can't be too appealing to those employed to look after parks.

"Opening up new opportunities for all Tasmanians"

Hold on!!! The Halls Island development was/is CLOSING the island to most Tasmaniains, except the very wealthy.

While I appreciate the need and importance of a strong tourism sector, lately it seems tourists and the industry are being prioritized over Tasmanians. Hence i find that last line of the Hodgman reissue absolute rubbish.

"Tasmania's economic turnaround in recent years has been largely on the back of a wave of tourism.

"Record numbers of visitors are shouldering a backpack and shelling out cash to tackle the state's two most famous multi-day bush walks, the Three Capes Track, near Port Arthur in the state's south east, and the Overland Track, which starts at Cradle Mountain and ends at Lake St Clair.

"Ecotourism now has cross-party support, and the Tasmanian Liberals went into the last state election promising to build on that success with a promise of up to $20 million to deliver "Tasmania's next iconic multi-day, hut-based walk".

"There were five sites highlighted as contenders: the Freycinet Peninsula, The Walls of Jerusalem, South West Conservation Area, the Southwest National Park, and the Tarkine."

Why does it have to be hut based? Installations the size of the (Two Out of) Three Capes gluts just don't belong in National Parks or Conservation Areas.

Huts because the walk would be more popular, then permit systems coz it's become too popular, exclusive huts to separate the special few, from the populace. 'Wilderless'

State Government is “pulling every lever” to give developers access to the Tassie wilderness, say Greens

BLAIR RICHARDS, Mercury

EMAILS between a tourism operator and Parks staff show the State Government is “pulling every lever” to give developers access to the Tasmanian wilderness, the Greens say.

Heavily redacted Right to Information documents released to the Greens provide a glimpse of efforts to fast-track access to the South Coast Track for huts walk proponent Ian Johnstone.

An email dated May 10, 2018 from Mr Johnstone to Parks and Wildlife Service acting manager (planning and evaluation) Andrew Harvey said:

“I am planning to fly into the SW next Monday to inspect the hut sites with my appointed architect/builder. It would be helpful to get a response on the flagging tape, hand trimming of vegetation and auger holes by close of business Friday (tomorrow) if possible”.

In an email to a colleague later that day Mr Harvey said he would “speed things up” by drafting the necessary authority to be signed off to allow Mr Johnstone to travel to the South Coast Track the following Monday.

Mr Johnstone said once his proposal was submitted it would be open for public consultation for a time set by PWS.

He said the proposal to create a guided walk involved building six low-impact walkers huts along the 85km long South Coast Track.

Mr Johnstone said that like the “highly popular” huts model on the Overland Track, the proposed huts would be functional, comfortable and out of view of other walkers.

“They will not be luxury.”

He said the approval process required the huts and the sites to be independently assessed on environmental, cultural and other criteria
That looks like a pad.

Does the dialogue between Mr Johnstone (the developer) and Mr Harvey (the public official) constitute corrupt behaviour??

Is one person a developer and the other a politician or public servant? Then yes. This is Tasmania, after all. Corruption is the standard [i]modus operandi[.i].

Ubering Wilderness? :

https://www.themercury.com.au/news/tasm ... jo3oMpN_dU

"THE authors of a delayed tourism master plan for the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area will identify new opportunities for tourism development within the protected land.

An update on the progress of the long-awaited World Heritage Area tourism master plan showed that the document — expected by the end of this year — will not only provide strategic guidance for operators looking to work in the zone but identify further opportunities for tourism development, including new experiences and sites.

The draft tourism master plan would be placed on public exhibition once it had been endorsed by state and federal governments, the ERA Planning update said.

“[The draft document] will … provide clarity on the tourism experiences and sites, their prioritisation in terms of management and planning, the level of services within each area of the TWWHA, together with investment needs and priorities,” the update said.

“The draft tourism master plan will need to provide clarity to ensure that the enhancement of existing sites, together with the identification of new experiences and sites, will achieve sustainable growth in tourism visitation and development and maintain and enhance the TWWHA natural and cultural [universal outstanding values].”

UNESCO in 2015 requested the State Government deliver a tourism master plan to guide tourism development within the World Heritage Area.

The body last year listed the impacts of tourism, visitation and recreation as among threats faced by the area, which accounts for about one-fifth of the state.

Greens leader Cassy O’Connor said the update released this week by project leaders ERA Planning “confirm this is all about continued commercial exploitation of the wilderness”.

“The objective must be to protect the TWWHA’s values for all to enjoy but it’s clearly not,” Ms O’Connor said.

“It’s about private profit.”

In recommending the development of a tourism master plan, UNESCO called for the development of “strict criteria for tourism development … which would be in line with the primary goal of protecting the property’s [outstanding universal values]”.

In The Mercury today

Greens attack ‘dodgy’ secret tourism proposals
TOURISM proposals for the state’s national parks won’t be publicly listed until they reach the lease and licensing stage, in a change to the Government’s expressions of interest process.

Previously, proponents who entered the process were listed on the Co-ordinator General’s website. Twenty-four projects had been proposed under round two. In budget estimates hearings, Greens leader Cassy O’Connor asked why there was no public information about the new proposals. Coordinator General John Perry said projects were now listed when they advanced to the lease and licensing stage.

“We had significant feedback from proponents that (the old process) was bureaucratic and unwieldy,” he said.

Ms Cassy O’Connor described the Government’s approach to development in the wilderness “a disgrace”.

“I didn’t think you could get any more dodgy,” she said.
That looks like a pad.

*&^%$#!, public information made available (from that provided) has been minimal and very vague. Even this token effort is too much?
So perhaps they mean the hidden 'due process' behind such proposals? No need for that?
