I get the feeling it is a question not often asked:
"Currently there is no permission for dogs to be allowed onto any reserves in Western Tasmania, which includes the Mt Murchison and Mt Farrell Regional Reserves that were listed in the enquiry."

This is the sign opposite the walker resistration box at Roland (I remembered them situated the other way around). Pleased to note that firearms are prohibited and dogs are welcome! The way it should be :wink:

I do agree, the mountain tracks get a lot of local participation and it's great to see people accommodated wherever there isn't an outstanding reason. Just interpreting the signs it appears dogs allowed to Roland summit but not along the traverse?

And yet the Face Track sign says no dogs. Someone needs to make up their mind. If they have one . . .

ps: there are also signs there at the moment warning about packs of wild dogs being sighted in the area.

Regarding Murchison, does anyone actually have any evidence they are not allowed? Because I always check before heading out and for Murchison there is nothing online, and no signage at the walk itself, and it is a Regional Reserve, not a conservation area. On the parks website link I provided above, it states "However, dogs are welcome in many Conservation Areas, Regional Reserves and Nature Recreation Areas, and some State Reserves" and "There are many places throughout the State outside national parks and nature reserves where dogs are allowed. Some reserves such as Regional Reserves and Nature Recreation Areas may have designated areas where dogs are allowed". (Note how highlighting things in officious red text is unnecessary!)

In my opinion if it is not a National Park, and there is no signage or indication otherwise, then the default position would be that they are allowed (in the absence of any evidence to the contrary). The Mount Murchison track is very steep and has very little vegetation, it is not a place that is teeming with native wildlife.

Actually the way the regs are written, it is the opposite. Unless there is a sign permitting dogs, they are not allowed. This applies to regional reserves and conservation areas as well.

Mt Roland regional reserve is interesting, because I've also seen the sign saying dogs allowed, and next to it one saying they aren't. I haven't been there for a few years but I believe the sign permitting them has been removed.

The exception is land zoned Permanent Timber Production or Future Production Forest which don't have the same restrictions.

Mt Murchison would be a no-no, given that it's a regional reserve and there's no sign allowing dogs. If I had a dog up there I'd also be worried about them missing the edge and ending up over a cliff :shock:

I checked MT murchinson and Mt Farrel with parks Tasmania and they said it was fine. MT Roland was the one they said no to but say the little park at gowrie is dog friendly and maybe that is why there is confusion.

Options they gave as alternates were st valentines Peak and mother Cummings Peak.

This information better not change between now and November as I’m driving from northern nsw for a hiking holiday with dog onboard specially!

I’ve come across dogs unleashed running 100m ahead of their owners before and been bailed up by a German shepherd!Keep them on a leash at all times,you don’t know who else is out there!

Not surprising to hear but I have my doubts this is correct regarding Murchison and Farrell. I'd bring along some evidence of this advice.

Obviously not their duty but maybe Parks could just add those places to their list.
